If you are going to spend the $$$ on the required valvetrain and want to run them non ported, it would almost seem as if you didn't realize what you were getting into. (no flame intended)
They are great heads, but definitely need some work to see their full potential.
How big of an engine do you plan to put these on?

Yes running them out of the box is less than ideal.
To answer your question.
The 220s take standard valvetrain setups.
The 227s require offset everything (shaftmount rockers etc) to accomodate the 60/40 valve spacing.
