Here we go.

I have a auto 2nd owner 2:73 with a 150 speedo they did block 1st gear selection do to emmsion

Gear ratio had nothing to do with speedo. Its if you had factory z-rated tires, and if you bought your car from somebody they could have put zated tire after they got it.

So ther you have it.

160+ is not that scary. I had my new shocks on 217 rubber. And passed a car on the freeway doing that felt real controlled and brakes do work. Some guys just scare easy.....:P

I haven't read the whole post, but I would like to correct some of the rumors I read above.

You could get the 150 MPH speedometer regardless of the gear ratio you had in your car... yes, even if it was 2.73. As long as the tires ordered INITIALLY were Z rated.

In 95, you could still get a 110 speedo and my old '95 M6 Z is a live confirmation of that.

The governers were initially set at 108 MPH for these cars. Then, they updated the tune and set them at 118 MPH. (so if you have a 94-95 car which cuts of at 108, you can take it to the dealer and have it reflashed with a new calibration that has the governer at 118 MPH).

I'm pretty sure you could still get the 110 speedo in '96 since '96 cars still had the old style clusters.

From 97 on, the cars that were ordered with non Z-rated tires were still limited at 118 MPH, but they got the 150 speedo as far as I know. (I'm only 100% sure about the governer part).

And from 96 on, the cars that had Z rated tires were limited at 160 MPH, while the 93-95 had it at 255.

If your car has a 150 MPH cluster and cuts out at 108 or 118, then either the cluster or the computer/program has been swapped. (most likely the cluster)

You can simply swap a 150 cluster in a 110 car without changing anything else.

And the limiter, at least in '94, was right at 110MPH.
This is true. Before I bought my Z I was looking a 95 droptop and it had the 110 speedo. When I was test driving it I nailed it and the tranny hit. Which I didnt know at the time was just a busted tranny mount (which I busted mine two weeks later). So I thought it was a v8 swap in a v6 body because I also drove a 95 T-Top with M6 and it had the 150 speedo. Not knowing about this site to ask ? I figured it was a swap out of course. The guy sold the M6 on me the next day which was very low down so I ended up the the 97 A4 . Now I wish I bought it because I always waited the droptop. Well I have seen like over 10 95 droptops and all had 110 speedos. And come to think about it. The tires were skinner not beefy looking like the 150 speedo cars

Ironically, V6 cars got 120 MPH speedos. (regardless of what options they had)
I remember I was kind of pissed off that a V6 had a 120 speedo and I had a 110 in my Z28.

Oh yes, you can't interchange V6 and V8 clusters. The tach will be off due to the difference in the number of cylinders.

Is there an RPO code to tell if your car has a governor on it? I have a 96 A4 Z28, bought it used. It has 2.73 gears and when I bought it, it had the wimpy 235 on it. The speedometer says 155, and I think I've gone around 110 or 115, so don't know if its speed limited or not.

I live in wonderful California, where you can't do crap (bye bye LT headers), but the car was originally sold to a dealership in Ohio.

Anyone know if a used car sold in California would require a governor added, if not existing before?

That's it....I'm going driving and testing that 118 threshold....sorry CHP, have to do it!!!

94 Z Ragtop also. I don't remember the Z rated tires as an option when I bought it new and I would have noticed. I am pretty sure it wasn't available for the convertible.

I always assumed the car wasn't as stable as the hard top so they only rated it at 110. It came with the touring tires.

I'm not sure what is the RPO code for Z rated tires, but if anyone wants to find out if your car has a governer (or at least if it's supposed to have one) you can email me your VIN number at tuner@madz28.com and I'll tell you for sure.

But not until '96. Our '95 V6 Camaro has the 110 speedo. I've looked at a few '96 V6 Camaros and I recall them having the 120 speedo.

At any rate, this 110/150 speedo issue is clearly spelled out in the F-body FAQ which someone posted earlier... I'm surprised some people are still debating

Interesting.... I guess the 120 clusters were for the 3.8L V6 introduced in 95 and the 110 were for the 3.4L....

As for the FAQ posted earlier, it has several mistakes and it is outdated.

My information is based on PCM files that I can get for any car using GM reflashing software.

140 with the top down . What even more scary is when you hit about 130 with the top up and it begins to float on the latches, it feels like the tops about to be ripped off.

My car says 115 and I know that it was orginally ordered with cheap tyres not Z rated. Thats the only reason and If you also ordered 2.73 rear you got locked out of first gears, To me these are 2 major set backs which my car has both. I pull hard on any car until the 108 limiter damn, It's like hitting a brick wall cause the car shifts into fouth at about 92-93 mph, pulls hard then wham your on the speed limiter. I like the limiter for one reason, It won't let my dumb **** go over 108. Speed and changing lanes on the Highway is dangerous

160+ mph is scary as hell i dont know what you nagwas are thinking. I did it once just to see the car do it. After that i say **** that. I am not going to be obliterated by some deer who decides to jump out in front of me. Or some dude on the highway who decides to lane change into my face.

Albeit i will give you this. The car rides good at that speed The pressure from the air squats you right on the ground and all the seals blow open its like riding in a rocket ship. However too rich for my blood one time was a good thrill for me. JMO.
