Z28s come stock with 235 width tires as opposed to the 245/50-16s. The wider tires were an option.

Cars with the skinnier tires had the lower mph speedo and a I also believe speed limiter.

I think it was actually the speed rating of the tires as opposed to the size (I think). If I'm not mistaken, the all season radials got you the 110 speedo, while the ZR radials got you the 150+.

Yes I have one. If you have stock programming you won't be able to go over 115.

Hmmm, I've also heard that before and it may very well be true. I think that there were both Z rated and all season 245's. Seeing very few 110mph speedo cars in my life just leads me to believe it had to do with the tire size option.

I had not heard of that before. In fact, I thought they all came with the same sized tires but the ones that were not ordered with Z rated tires came with the 110 speedo.

FWIW, my 94Z convertible has a 110 speedo. Bummer

maddog's right but...i thought it tied in with the rear axle (2.73's gotthe 110 and 3.23's got the 150 or 155, however you like to look at it)
and i know all m6's had a performance gear 3.42 (save forthe m29 viper t56 in 93 which had 3.23's) which i thought all had 150mph speedos because of it

It looks like we were both right.

http://www.f-body.org/faq/4/4_5.htm#ch4_5g

All Z28s, Formulas, and Trans Ams come with Good Year Eagle GA (235/55R16) touring tires as stock. Options for Good Year Eagle GS-C (245/50ZR16) tires (option QLC) or Good Year Eagle RS-A (245/50ZR16) tires (option QFZ) are also available. With either of these Z-rated tires, the car gets a the 155 MPH speedometer and does NOT have a speed limiter.
Turns out both of the bigger tires were Z rated.

edit - also look here.

My car is wierd. I bought it used, but it came with the 150 speedo, but it had the governor at 115. I checked on the door and it came with the 235 T-rated tires. The previous owner definately did not seem like the type that would swap out the speedos for the better one though.

this is not true, ive got 2.73 rear and ive got the 155 speedo
and same w/ my buddy hes got the 2.73 and 155 speedo
why would the higher top end car get the slower speed?

it may be the other way around

Is there any way to see if your car came with Z rated tires from the factory?? My car has the 155 speedometer..but has the 2.73's..i've had it to 115 a couple of times, but ive always backed off around there...i've never held it to 118 i guess to feel if it had a governor..now my dad claims that he has seen an indicated 126 before, and claims it was still pullin good. But i have 235's on there, even though those are the tires that the dealership put on there when we bought it with 16K miles on it. There Z-rated, but i dont know what it came with from the factory..so my dad claims he has seen 126..is there any code on the door that i can tell for sure what it came with from the factory..and if i really have the governor or not..i really dont wanna run out and "test" it..
