Di-electric Grease and spark plug wires
Di-electric Grease and spark plug wires
Is it ok to use Di-electric grease in my spark plug wires? I put some of the grease in each end of the my plugs and my car is running real rough.
I think I have a mixed up wire but I just want to make sure it's not the grease.
Thanks!

Re: Di-electric Grease and spark plug wires
Di-electric grease is a good insulator. It could cause major problems with conduction of electricity. Even at the voltages you seee on a plug.

Wipe off the ends of the plug and Q-tip the metal contact in the boots. You don't need a prefect job, just make sure plug has a pretty clean contact with the wire's connector.
You should only have it on the inside of the boot where it touches the white part of the plug.
This will seal the plug to prevent water from getting in. That and making the boot easy to get off is the only reason to use it.
Alot of people are mis-informed about this grease. It is used around ignitions because it doesn't conduct electricty, not because it does.

Re: Di-electric Grease and spark plug wires
Some Carb cleaner should help get off some of the grease from the contacts, its definatly not good for the conection if its on the metal connectors. If you can clean the plugs and the boot since it'll be on both. You probably do have a mixed up wire, even though it's covered in non-conductive grease, when you snap the metal to the metal it should still make enough contact...
I usually apply the grease to the boot with my pinky and I only use a small amount of it. If you can get at the plugs you can put it on the ceramic part the boot slides around instead of putting it right on the boot. Whatever is easiest.
