Deleting EGR

Can you tune the egr out of the PCM and just leave everything on the engine or do you have to take out the valve, solenoid, and tube and block it off.

Re: Deleting EGR

There is no real good reason to just turn EGR off. It doesn't operate at wot or really any acceleration. So it doesn't rob power. IMO, the only reason to remove the EGR equipment is if it is broke. Or to clean up the looks of the engine bay and weld shut the PITA EGR tube on the header.

Re: Deleting EGR

the only reason i ask this is because almost every day i reset the PCM and the trouble code keeps coming back. And i was wondering if i deleted it would it get rid of the code forever.

Re: Deleting EGR

What code are you getting? If the EGR valve is physically damaged it could cause drivibility problems. If it just a electrial problem and it isn't stuck open you can tune it out in the PCM and the code will stop being set.

Re: Deleting EGR

When i added long tubes with no emissions hookups i blocked the EGR tube with a peice of aluminim soda can metal. Pulled the air pump and all the associated lines and get no codes.

Re: Deleting EGR

As long as there is no physical problem with the EGR causing it to stick open... What code(s) are you getting?

What year is your car? Might want to add that info, particularly when you are using it as an example.

If its a 93-95 OBD-I, it is very unusual to get a code for deleting the EGR system. The 96/97 OBD-II cars (as is the 96 belonging to LT1 PWR) have an extremely sensitive EGR diagnostic, and 99% of the time, you will get a code. Same with the AIR..... OBD-I you just unplug the pump and make sure the fuse is good. OBD-II, there is also flow detection, and its harder to beat.

Re: Deleting EGR

Sure, you can "tune" it out and get rid of the SES light. But when they do an emissions check, it will show "not ready" on the EGR system. Some emissions tests allow up to two systems to show "not ready" .
