Degreeing my new Cam????????

O.K well I need some more help. I'm putting in a a brand new valvetrain from CMotorsports with P+P heads and a 221/227 Comp Cam. My question is do I have to DEGREE the cam like the comp cams instructions says. I'm now getting ready to put everything back together. NEW water pump, New OPTI, New sprockets and chain NEW everything . But it look like it can only go in one way. So why would I have to degree the cam?? Also what is Degreeing the cam mean- To time it?? Is it really necessary?? Is it hard? Every thing seems to be pretty easy so far. Except for taking the passenger side header off.

Also any pointers would be very helpful

You'll need an adjustable timing set if you are going to degree your cam, incase its off a little. Its not absolutely necessary but its something I've always done. If you've never done it before, the easiest way to do it will be to get someone who's degreed cams before to do it for you.

well I just bought a new GM sprocket and chain. So does that mean I can't degree in my new cam? In the instructions it say to do the intake centerline method?? And to use a degree wheel and stuff like that.

Thanks

Whats you've got is good enough, just line up the marks and go.

Line up the marks on the sprockets.

Take the cam sprocket, the mark should be at 6 o'clock, the crank sprocket should be at 12 o' clock.

You can set your timing with programming.

There is no need to degree or break in our camshafts.

Ya, it will run ok without degreeing the cam. It ran 'ok' from the factory, didn't it? Various components function ok, without being spot on. No, if you chose to degree your cam, you would NOT need an adjustable timing set, providing I'm understanding what constitutes the meaning of an ATS. What you will need is an offset crank key or an offset bushng for the cam dowel. Sometimes, a little various array of offset bushings or keys is available as a package. Sorta like a package of various thickness rear end adjusting shims, but it need not have anything to do with cam or crank gears themselves. The more experienced and effective (for lack of a better word) one becomes at the procedure, the easier it becomes to improvise.

Ever notice how certain steps or procedures are not considered necessary, till a person understandsthem and learns how to perform them? I don't consider myself an auto trans expert, but wouldn't dream of assembling a trans without thoroughly checking component continuity and clearances.

I degreed mine with some offset bushings that came in a kit from Comp Cams. I had my motor all the way out though and i wasnt that hard. I had someone that has degreed one before help me. You dont really have to do it, but to get every bit of performance out of the cam that you can....it helps. It pretty much boils down to if you have the tools (indicater, degree wheel, etc. ) and the time.

JONEZ_Z, What he said and another reason for degreeing the cam is a lot of them are not ground to the specs they say they are so basically you are making sure everything is right.
