Degrading Gears

I recently picked up a ***** set of 3.73 gears for my car. No matter how many times i had the rear end apart, it would not be able to be shimmed out enough so that it would STOP ******* WHINING. I had the gears professionally done a number of times, and still nothing. The gears ARE VERY LOUD. I'm worried that this is causing me to have a weak rearend. I'm afraid to go with N20 off the line cuz i dont want to blow the rear end.

I also can't stand driving with these gears on the highway. When I'm going 80 MPH i feel like I'm killing my motor by staying at such High RPMs for so long.

So I'm thinking of stepping down to a 3.42 gear. Hopefully this will give me better gas mileage, better traction, quieter, and stronger out of the hole. So let me know what u all think. Worth stepping down? Stronger gears? Any help on the subject would be appreciated. (BTW i have a 3 series torsen diff carrier) THANX

Camaro rearend gears are known to whine. Motive/GM gears are known to whine the least and I used to run some Precision Gears in my car that never whined. My current 3.73 Strange gears do whine quite a bit but they've been running strong for about a year now. I would suggest changing brands before stepping down to a lower gear. The higher the gear ratio the stronger it is.

Are u sure about that?

When u go up in gear ratio, u are lowering the number of teeth on the pinion gear, and thus less teeth make contact with the main gear. Wouldn't this mean u have more of a chance breaking a gear if less teeth are in contact with the main gear? especially if u launch hard. I know a lot of people who run 4.10s in their automatic and blow them like crazy.

A 3.73 is a higher ratio than a 4.10. Seems kind of backwards, I know. When I refer to a higher ratio gear set being srtonger it's because it has less teeth. This results in the teeth being thicker and thusly stronger. It may vary from brand to brand. I have heard that Strange gear teeth are a little stronger than, say, Motive. Don't quote me on that though.

Well, I've decided for sure that I'm gonna step down to 3.42 gears. My programming currently sux as well, so i'm gonna get a PCMforless tuning while I'm changing gears.
