Before I begin I will say that I did try and search for my answer before I posted this but I had no luck.

My car now as it sits is a 95 m6 Z28, stock 3.42's with mildly ported heads and a 847 with everything to go with it to make it all work(fresh motor). The car drives fine with very minimal surge(Ion is the man).

My problem is I want to drive the car everyday b/c I am getting ride of my daily beater so I dont want to live with it in its current state. Im looking into putting a hotcam into it. But first I will tell you what I want.

I miss the tractor like power band where it would idle in 6th gear@ 35mph.
But I hated the fact it was out of breath past 5200.
I dont want a lopey idle that will shake me and the car to death, but I want a LITTLE bit of a lope. But at the same time, I would rather have no lope and have the driveability I want.
I want that instant power right off of idle like stock, but I want it to pull all the way to 6000.

Is the hot cam right for me? Or maybe something smaller? Maybe a stock LT4 cam? And should I ditch the heads that I have now for some stockers? The car will remain a full bolt on car regardless if I put a hotcam in it or not.

 

My old crane 227 cam worked exactly like that.

I had a hotcam. It was a wonderful, albeit mild, cam. It dyno'd 339RWHP on a pure stock tune. It has a lope but with the right exhaust it sounds totally bitchen. However, it has some off-idle issues and you need a good tune to handle it. It can also be problematic for smog checks, but if you dial in the programming, it can squeak by.

I changed it out for a CC-304. This is even more mild. The reason is, I went with a full Procharger P1SC build out to a 383 and this cam has a 114 LSA and good lift. The net result is a car with a very good idle, high vacuum throughout the low-to-mid throttle ranges and responds pretty good to the boost when applied. I could have gone to a more aggressive cam and gotten more power, but I've put over 45,000 miles as a daily driver and about 2 miles blasting down a drag strip and I can squeak by smog while getting 22 mpg. I also drive through San Francisco, and it handles the steep hills with ease.

Keep searching and ask more than a few people of the types of cams and what their characteristics are. If you go with a HotCam, you might want to up your gears to a 3.73.

 

I would look at the Hotcam, CC305, or the CC503. All are popular grinds and have good street manners.

 

I know but another reason for this is that the camaro isnt my "hotrod" Ive been trying to build my monte for too long but I keep messing with the camaro. So I would like it to be close to stock but fun enough to drive everyday and also liveable on a day to day basis. Dont get me wrong, I love my 847......it will be going into the engine thats going into the monte.

Emmisions are not an issue in FL

 

seen some guys run the gm846 and the crane 227 with good results, that's more than likely what im going to do to mine as well. me and my bro are trying to acquire an 86 MC SS to build a nice carbed LT1 383 stroker for. good luck!

I have a 101mm turbo and a big block for my monte

 

Whatever you get make sure you get it on a high LSA. My buddy mark has a pretty decently big cam in his 01 Z28, but it is on a 116 or 117 LSA and nobody can tell that the car has a cam. Untill it goes down the track to run 11.7xx's @ 117mph all day.

I got a 350 thats carbed with fast burn heads and i am using the hot cam kit and it runs great on the street and is not bad on gas i take it to the track a lot is there a cam i could get to give me a lil more power?

 

i hear the cc503 is a sweet DD cam with more power then the hotcam..... i always loved the sound and power of the gm847, i wonder if the gm846 has nearly the same lope as the gm847 but with just less power....

i want a cam that has a sweet lope, i wanna be able to drive by someone and they say wow, that thing is cammed

 

yeah, I know I could always do that. But then I should just get a custom ground cam.
