dead tranny? broken engine??

two days ago my car started making this wierd noise from underneathe.... Some where where the engine comes together with the tranny. It's like a knocking noise, when driving feels like something is vibrating and while in neutral... and push the gas a little it sounds like something is hitting something else when the engine's rpms go up.

The tranny switches fine through all the gears (this is A4). if you step on it it redlines and hesitates a little, like a half a second hesitation. Last of all, when i put it in drive... from park, it just stands there and doesn't move.

What could this be? totally dead tranny? torque converter? fly wheel?

I can record the noise and post it if it helps.

thanx

If you put it in D from P, and it doesn't move, then how do you get it to drive

The tranny mount is prothane.... Haven't broken that since I've had it.

Ok, when I go from P to D and not push the gas....the car doesn't move until i hit the gas and it goes to 2000rpm. then it starts moving

Oh crap! Do they wear out that fast?

BTW, I just went to drive my g/f home and it's late in the night now.

Anyhow, I just noticed that there is massive tranny fluid on the floor!

I know my pan isn't leaking....... I just replaced the filter and seal 3000 miles ago, maybe even less.

could it be leaking from where it is connected to the engine? and if so, how could they come apart?

You could be lucky check your tranny fluid, if its low fill it back up and see how it runs. Probably burn't it up though. Im going on my 3rd transmission in the last year.

Great news! (well for me that is.)

Took off the tranny today and discovered my insane rattle. My flywheel broke off of two screws. Getting a new flywheel today.

I thought my tranny came to a hault. Phew....

Flywheel? I didn't know Auto's had a flywheel

BTW, it's a 'flexplate' Just FYI

Glad it's not the tranny, that would be some MAJOR suckage right there. Get some good bolts for it too.
