Dead at high rpm's.
Dead at high rpm's.
So as the title says my car seems to now die at high rpms. I launched pretty well but when the car went to shift second the car just died out and the exhaust stated to backfire. I let off the throttle and then eased back into it and it went fine. I checked all plug wires and ignition coil, all seem to be fine. I am thinking opti at this point, anyone concur?
Re: Dead at high rpm's.
I concur if you get the "virtual rev-limiter" thingy...
Although I had that happen to me and it was actually the harness, not the opti. That day I don't know if I was really happy that I could take the new opti back to the store for a refund or really pissed off that I was out there in the cold soaked in coolant for another GM connector gone bad.
Although not neccessarily the opti, that symptom usually points to the opti in most cases- however, I experienced a lack of power at all rpms. On the bottom end the engine would just be slow and not pull as hard as it should.
Good luck.

Re: Dead at high rpm's.
Well thank you for the input, but I have determined that is is not the opti. I only seem to have the "virtual rev-limiter problem when the engine shifts at high rpm's from first gear to second. (A4). Could it be a transmission problem? Any other ideas?
Re: Dead at high rpm's.
Are you shifting high enough to get into the rev limiter? How about the fuel shutoff? Try shifting it at a lower RPM and see.Something may be going on with the tranny causing it to rev high before it completely shift's or slipping on the shift.
Re: Dead at high rpm's.
My Z28 used to fall on its face at high rpm's, checked the wires at night and saw no arching and plug wires were fairly new, drove car with fuel pressure gage hooked up, pressure was good. My car was fixed for $25.00 with some auto zone wires, which was wierd to me because failing plug wires usually drop cylinders when engine is loaded ( going at steady speed up a hill ) and mine never did that. Good luck, just wanted to share my story with ya.
Re: Dead at high rpm's.
Just because your wires look ok doesnt mean they are.. are they stock? Go with some new wires, cant hurt and youll be doing it eventually anyway.. If you have headers go with the taylor ovc wires from thunderracing.. or if you have stock manifolds go with the taylor wires and get the set made for your car. My friends car had one hell of a difference with his wires.. Ill tell him to post about it.

This seems most logical...seeing as how the plugs and wires are pretty new, not burnt at all, and have never given me a problem before. Also, shifting from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to OD seems to have absolutely no problem. By the reaction of the car when this happens it seems like fuel shutoff could be the case. I hate transmissions
...guess its going in to get checked. Couldnt have happened at a better time either considering the car is being picked up today to be shipped to Florida to my new home.
Re: Dead at high rpm's.
Turns out I have something rattling in my cat now. This seems to have happened at the same time that the shifting at WOT did. Could it possibly be that at WOT something is moved in the cat and is restricting flow, causing the o2's to compesate for something and shutting the car down?
