cylinder head torque
cylinder head torque
Does anyone know what I need to torque these head bolts to? My chiltons book says to torque them to 22 ft lbs and then turn the long ones 80 degrees more and the shorter ones 67 degrees more. Seems kind of silly to me. What should I torque them to without having to figure out if I'm turning them too much. Stupid Chiltons.

[ A ]Torque valves are based on 75% of the fasteners yield strength. Use the manufactures torque sequence but do not use the engine manufactures torque specs. Torque the bolts to 65 ft lbs for ARP MOLY ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT (or ARP THREAD SEALER) or torque to 85 ft lbs with 30wt motor oil.
[ B ]Due to the heat expansion rate of ALUMINUM, it is recommended that the torque should be 60 ft lbs with ARP MOLY ASSEMBLY LUBRICANT (or ARP THREAD SEALER).

The TTY method is meant to give more accurate clamping forces that are less skewed by friction.Starting in 1996, the factory shop manual shows the TTY specs just as the Chiltons does.
