Why would you need 3" pipe for a 350 horse motor?

3" can be done, but 2.5 will fit a little better.

wow thats a beautiful setup, what kind of mufflers are those? is that 2.5" piping? looks like theres room for dual cutouts before the axle too

2 1/2 duals are more than adequate. Whoever was telling you to go 3" duals is a tard and should be shot.

I went 3in true duals dumped at axle Didn't loose any power and clearance was still great. The reason I went 3in was for a louder exhaust note. My buddy has same set-up But with 2 1/2in, and mine is noticeably louder.

Build it once.

If your goal is to eventually make 450+ fwhp then build a 3" system. If you plan to stay under that then I'd stick with 2.5".

The more hp you make, the more you are going to lose if the exhaust is smaller.

I ran high 11's on a stock exhaust (no cats though) with a flowmaster muffler.

Question Re: Custom true duals, need opinion of setup

Would there be any loss in going with a 3" exhaust instead 2.5" exhaust on a bolt-on car due to less back pressure? That's why you would lose torque down low, right?

I'm about to order a set of stepped Kook's and TSP Rumbler 3" exhaust. Will be building a 383/LE3 down the road and only want to buy this exhaust stuff once. Still interested in what y'all think will happen to my car right now though.

I'm not an engineer or physicist, but I would assume - if anything - you would see gains going with 3" over 2.5". IMO the only reason people should be debating to go with 3" or 2.5" true dual setup should be ground clearance or possible sound differences.

BTW I have stepped Kook's LT's with their 3" ORY going into a TSP Rumbler. Sounds great and has a really deep and bass(y) sound in the lower RPM's (literally shakes the change in my cupholder). Upper RPM's start to scream and somewhat sounds like GMMG. I've gotten numerous compliments on it.

I'll have to get a better vid BTW It doesn't pop anymore either

I agree... the only loss you'll see is 1/2" of ground clearance.

On another note, I've never understood the arguement... "well, if I made XXX power with this suboptimal part it must not be that bad right.

Let me rephrase that to read like it should.... "I'm happy using parts that I know are costing me some hp just to say that I can make decent power with them."

Much better...

Re: Custom true duals, need opinion of setup

Agreed...

Just because a setup has made XX amount of power with a part doesn't mean that it's the right part for the job. I can't stand conclusions that come from a situation where the scientific method was not applied, or the other part in question was never even used.

Re: Custom true duals, need opinion of setup

evil erik, i apologize if my above replies were too vague. i did check out your website and saw the estimation of your current hp as 350 (as to flywheel or at the wheels, i am uncertain. assuming the power is at the wheels, i added a liberal 20% drivetrain loss and concluded that you would be at ~420 fwhp). i assumed the original question was referring to your current vehicle setup and that you inquired as to what would be a good dual exhaust setup for you now. i believe that dual 2 1/2" exhaust tubing would be adequate for your current needs. i have no scientific data that would suggest otherwise, although the original post title does state that you are looking for opinions. i do agree that 3" piping is more efficient to a point as you go up in power. at which exact point, i can offer you no advice. perhaps mindgame's notation of 450fwhp+ would be a good starting point as for when you might want to start looking into the 3" dual setup. his knowledge of cars and physics far exceed that of mine and i would seriously consider his opinion on the matter.

Thumbs up Re: Custom true duals, need opinion of setup

94sinister, do you mean complaints from close neighbors? If so, I really don't care too much. They'll have to get use to it. All I got to say is that it'll be their wake up call at 0430 in the morning. I don't know if it will be any louder or what, but I am going with the X-pipe Rumbler setup from TSP. It is really for an LS1, but they said all I would need to do is get the drivers side pipe bent about 3/4" one way to make it fit.
