Currently 42 lb injectors, shop says too big?

Im at the shop, and they are saying that my 42lb fuel injectors might be too big. I guess the guy pulled out 2 spark plugs and he is saying they are blacker than black.

He says ill get more hp with smaller fuel injectors, and that smaller fuel injectors would be better.

Im probably hoping for around 440rwhp when i get all finished, probably around 400+ right now, should i go with smaller fuel injectors?

What would the ideal size fuel injectors be for my setup if N/A.

And if i ever do a wet nos setup, do i need bigger fuel injectors?

Shop is saying 36 or 38lb fuel injectors would work out better for me. The shop isn't saying that the fuel injectors are making my car run like ****, they just feel ill get better performance off of a little smaller fuel injectors.

just trying to get some opinions and advice.

thanks

If its running too rich, its a tuning problem or some other problem. It should be able to run on 42's, without fouling the plugs. The duty cycle will be nice and low.

You won't need larger injectors for a wet shot.

yeah, im pretty sure its running rich, i can smell the unburned fuel.

Of course i do plan on getting a dyno tune sometime soon, so i guess it isn't that big of a deal to have 42 lb injectors than if i can get the air/fuel ratio tuned correctly.

thanks injuneer

Re: Currently 42 lb injectors, shop says too big?

If the motor is running rich, can it cause the rings to not seat correctly, and therefore cause blow by?

Cause i have an oil leak around the opti area, and the shop said they used "national" seals which are the same as gm seals, and they are wondering if i have high oil pressure in the crankcase because the rings aren't seated properly because it could be running rich causing the pressure to shoot oil out of the seals?

so its either the seals or them sealing it correctly was a problem, or they also think it could be because the car is running rich.

If its leaking near the opti area they probably didn't get the waterpump seal in right. It can be difficult to do and will leak if you don't install it correctly.

if 42's are too much for your car ask them how a 5.4L lightning idles just fine with them. Hopefully they know it doesn't idle in boost or anything

36's woudl probally been a better choice for you but 42's will definately work.

What do you currently have for tuning?

As for that oil leak from the front cover, I don't think you have to do anything wrong for it to leak up there. My crank seal has been replaced twice and it still spits oil out of there all over the stuff in the front, opti included.

Re: Currently 42 lb injectors, shop says too big?

none of the front cover seals seem to be leaking, but i know for sure i have oil leaking somewhere, can't pinpoint it and shop is still trying to figure out where it is leaking, found out today that it wasn't the seals on the front cover.

i currently have tuning from Ion "madwolf" and the car is running a little rich, i can smell the unburned fuel.

Opti blew into pieces as i posted in another thread.

Re: Currently 42 lb injectors, shop says too big?

I would test the pressure maybe the fuel system upgrades are pushing the regulator into not being able to cut pressure enough and you have more than what Ion figured on when he tuned. If that is the case then he would need to adjust the tuning a little. I have heard of some people finding extra fuel pressure when swapping in those fuel system upgrades, the Racetronix kit really helps the fuel pump work very well, not a bad thing just something that sometimes needs to be accounted for.

A gas smell at idle on a cammed motor isn't necessarily an indication that the motor is running rich.

What sssalah said^^^^. I had Bryan at PCMforless dyno tune my set up and its at 12.9-13.0 a/f wide open which is great, but its idles a little rich...Most cammed motors will idle a bit rich...

Re: Currently 42 lb injectors, shop says too big?

yeah, ive been hearing that a lot of cammed motors will idle a little rich due to the overlap. Also about the spark plugs being blacker than normal, i heard that will happen also because of the cam.

I would assume that my car isn't running any richer than most people's since i usually only smell the unburned fuel at idle, so im figuring the shop is just throwing things out there that they can use to go against fixing any problems i might have.

ill find out where the smoke is coming from, and im going to check on the cam pin length also to see if it is longer than .62" or if it is good.

thanks for the help guys.

Your car will run fine with the 42s if it is tuned correctly. I agree with Alvin that 36's would be better but the 42s will work just fine. I have ran both my current 36's and 42's and had 128 BLMs across the board with a simple injector constant tweek when I droped in the 42's and the regular changes for WOT. I could get the same WOT and part throttle A/F for both the 36's and 42's and suspect I could go with 32's if I wanted to push it a little. WQhy don't you log some data and have Ion drop you another tune?, Mail order is great but if you provide your tuner with some real world results he can usaly improve the results greatly.
