Crankshaft Pulley

Is the crank pulley for the timing chain on tighter than the hub? I got the hub off earlier with little problem and the right bolts.

But, I'm changing my timing belt and I'm having difficulty pulling the crank pulley for the timing chain. Maybe the Key is jamming it tighter. Is there a trick to pulling the crank pulley? Any secrets?

Thanks.

What? Are you talking about the lower timing chain gear?

Yes, the crank pulley. I'll edit the earlier message.

I used a 3-jaw puller to get mine off. Sometimes you can get behind it with a screwdriver/chisel but I just went and grabbed a 3-jaw from O'Reilly's and it came right off. Reason I took mine off was to change the crank key to a 96-97 one so I could install my reluctor wheel.

Edit: Be careful when positioning so you don't snap a tooth off your gear.

Yep, I used a three-prong puller also.

Ok, on my way to Pep Boys. I've got a 4" 3-jaw puller and will need a 6" 3-jaw puller.

Why won't the 4" work?

The reach wasn't long enough. Even after I put the bolts in the furthest holes back. Some have longer jaws, this one didn't.

I just picked up at 2-jaw 6" with a longer reach. It should work. Fingers crossed.

2 or 3 jaw puller should work. Just keep it straight and protect the crank bolt hole.

Thanks everyone. I got a 2 jaw puller on loan from Pep Boys. The puller threads were not going to mate with the crank threads. So, I put a high-grade washer at the face of the puller to keep it off the crank threads. It worked!!! The crank timing gear came off.
