Crankshaft key

Hello,

I am assembling my new motor which is a 97 oem new shortblock. My car is a 94 and uses the shorter key for the crank which is flush with the crank sprocket on my timing set.

The new shortblock has the longer key installed which is used with the reluctor wheel I guess. Can I leave the longer key in there or do I need to remove it and install the shorter one.

I am using a stock 94 timing set, cover and crank hub.

Its stuck in there real good and doesnt want to come out, so thats why I ask. Otherwise, I would have just swapped them out.

Thanks for your help.

It has to come out or it will hold the damper hub away.

I have a little procedure that i've used with success in the past:

1) Removr th timing set if it's already installed.
2) Spray the key with PB blaster or other penetrating oil.
3) Using a small punch and a hammer, tap straight down on one end of the key. Don't hammer hard as you might miss or the punch might slip.
4) Once the key moves a small amount (if it doesn't come flying out...LOL) spray some more PB blaster and wait a few minutes.
5) Repeat step 3 as needed.

I haven't had to repeat step 3 at all.

Some people might suggest you should heat up the crank. That should work but I've never tried.....

Good luck!
