cranks more than once to start
ok so my car died teh other day ...
i learn its a fuel problem...
recently installed a new fuel pump so i checked that first
found a hose became unhooked...one that connects the pump to teh sending unit....
i fixed that problem temporarily with a hose clamp
car tarts right up ..let it run...runs fine
i put my system back into my car....
car doesn not start
crank a little more starts
now it takes a few cranking periods to start my car ...anybody have an idea?
car idles a little rough not a lot but enough to notice....put it in gear its smooth
i am frustrated outta my mind....this will be teh third time i have to do all this if it still a pump problem
anybody with opinions thanks

You need to be monitoring the fuel pressure while all this is going on. If you don't already have a gage, get one with a hose on it so you can tape it to the windshield for easy viewing. Usually there are 3 causes for long crank times. All of them deal with draining the fuel rails. One, the pump is allowing fuel to run back to the tank because the check ball is stuck. Two, the FPR has a hole in the diaphragm allowing the same thing. It's easy to find by fuel in the vacuum line connected to it. And third, the injectors are leaking. This can have two effects. It will allow fuel to run out of the rails and it can cause fuel to puddle in the intake. If the fuel puddles sufficiently, it can take several cranks to burn it off until the engine fires up.
The first thing you should do when you have a cranking problem like this is check the oil to be sure you don't have a smell of gas from crank case dilution. 2 of the 3 problems listed above can cause CC dilution. That is obviously bad.
The next thing to do is see how fast the fuel pressure drops when the engine is shut down. If it drops fast, the next thing to do is isolate the pump from the causes at the engine(FPR or injectors). This can be done with something to pinch the supply line off as the engine is shut down. I use a pair of needle nose vise grips with pieces of fuel line on the jaws to prevent damage to the cars fuel line. This will prevent the fuel from running back toward the tank. If it still drops off obviously something is wrong at the engine. If it does not drop when pinched but did before it was pinched, you proved the fuel pump is the problem.
Hope that helps
Dave

Re: cranks more than once to start
is the check ball on top of teh fuel pump or on the bottom?
reason y i am asking is b/c the fuel supply line fromt teh pump to the sending unit came lose and like i said i used a hose clamp to secure the line until i get a new one....
on top of teh pump where the fuel supply line is hooked there is a little thing inside...i dunno if its a valve or not..but maybe i may have tightened it to much and cause it ot be stuck open
so again is teh check ball on top of teh pump or where is it ?
does anybody have a diagram of the diferent parts of the pump?
