crank HUB TDC arrow???

My question, short and easy.

Do I have to take off the crank hub pulley to see the crank hub arrow for TDC??? Or is it located where I can see it with the pulley on? I don't want to use the pulley "dot" because I've had it off before and it's probably not orientated right.

The arrow is cast onto part # 42 in this pic, between two of the mounting holes. (pic thanks to Shoebox)

Be aware, the hub is not keyed; so it can spin on the crank causing it to be off from TDC.

Ok, well I thought it was also on part #45, looks like they even show an arrow on it in the diagram.

I might pull the pulley and look, just cuz I'm curious..............

I did not see a mark on part #45 when I replaced my timing cover seals/gasket; although I wasn't really looking either. The mounting holes are slightly offset though, which allows for part #42 to only go on #45 in one orientation.

The arrow is also on the hub itself

Just did a cam swap and I saw it on a 94 LT1 motor

Re: crank HUB TDC arrow???

There should also be a mark or cast line in the hub that relates to where the arrow is on the pulley.

Re: crank HUB TDC arrow???

thanks for the wealth of info.

Looks like good news because I've never had the crank HUB off and I can use the mark on their to find TDC. I'm just using it for valve lash, doesn't have to be 100% accurate.

Re: crank HUB TDC arrow???

follow shoebox's valve lash guide depending if your TDC compression or TDC exhaust

I am, I borrowed a compression guage to put in the #1 cylinder to see if I'm on compression stroke.
