Re: Crane 104227 Idle Video

Sounds good, and I agree with Dwayne...There's nothing wrong with smaller cams, especially in a street car....I have a small Joe Overton cam 226/234 in my 383 and its just sick at idle and still gets 21 mpg on hwy and traps at 118 mph...

Lee96Z28...I have no experience with this small 227 cam.. I have 10 years of the 211/219 LPE cam. Its a fantastic cam .533"/.560" with 1.6s its great for street and strip. It was in my 383 since 1995 and I went high 11s at 115 and a fluke 118 (which I could never back up..) and got 24-25 mpg on the highway. It passed MDs emissions better than any car I ever had. A little lope, too..A little more than the 227 I think, but I have no video sorry. I would HIGHLY recommend the LPE cam to anyone...and I just gave mine away...I knew I should've held on to it...

Re: Crane 104227 Idle Video

Well, with all the research that I have done, this was the right cam for my setup.. It will be serving double duty on this "stock" motor, and then will probably be going into my 355 that I just got back from the machine shop, and will most likely be complimented with a set of Lloyd's heads.

As far as a mileage drop, its not too bad.. On the highway Im getting around 20-25mpg on a cruise back from Vegas (350 miles all highway).

I do agree with you guys about going too big on a cam though, I was looking at a 234/248 to do service in my 383 which would have been a good choice in that thing, but when that blew and I went back to a 350, I thought briefly about stuffing the monster cam in there and then quickly changed my mind after a few minor calculations. My car lives in the upper rpms, so this was overall the best choice for me.

Car does sound great though.. What kind of mileage are you getting now with that "baby" cam?

I don't check it much since most of my driving is in traffic or just for fun
on weekends. My guess is 16-17 overall and 21-22 on the freeway.

What part of SoCal are you located in?

what would be the next step cam wise from the 227? i have it also but would like a bit more on the topside and a little loss on the bottom but maintain that smooth idle. is there anything?

Yep: got the baby in my 97SS along with dual-cats and SLP shorites. I like the sound at idle and it really sounds good when I put my foot in it.

The GM 845 is just a touch bigger but was designed for the TPI motor so the 227 here seems to deliver very similar performance. Next beyond that is the HOT cam not going to have this smooth an idle and will be a bit more rev happy.

Thanks for the info on the LPE cam! I guess I'm still undecided. I really want to hear it idle before I make a decision, though.

really worth it?
truedualws6, do you have any headers yet? IMO headers are definately worth it just for the sound. Tromp the pedal down and its music to the ears. And since yours is true dual it would sound badass.

I don't post on here much....... but

I have the LPE219 (219/219 .560/.560) in my 96 LT4 Corvette. It has a slight lope to it at idle. If you're ever in the Hayward area, shoot me an email to hear it.

Thanks. I might take you up on that. How does it run?

Yes. I have a set of the SLP dual-cat shorties that I bought off the board.
Thanks for the additional feedback. I've been looking for more reasons to
once again take apart a completey good and fine running setup to make
yet another modification. This may just be the straw that breaks the
mechanic's back. I really have no excuse not to install them, other than
laziness and the fact that my wife thinks I'm totally insane.

The mid-range and top-end pull have increased tremendously. I easily pulled a bolt-on LS1 that I used to normally hang side-by-side with. And I've yet to have it tuned.
