Couple quick valve lash questions...SORRY! :(
Couple quick valve lash questions...SORRY! :(
I KNOW the subject has been beat to death, but I couldn't find the answer I'm looking for. When adjusting the valves, is it done with the lifters pumped up, or bled down? I'm assuming up, but I don't know for sure. When I go to adjust them, and crank the engine over by hand, will the lifters bleed down because of the spring pressure on them? Or should I run the car long enough to get oil pressure up, then loosen ALL the rocker arms, and set them that way? My thinking is that if I adjust a valve with the lifter bled, once it pumps up when the car is running...it doesn't have enough pressure/movement to start lifting valves does it? Or, are they SUPPOSED to be bled down, and then the 1/16 turn PLUS the area the lifter moves when it pumps up is the right lash?
Maybe I'm just overanalyzing it...hope this makes sense, thanks!

Don't particularly care to make an enormous mess
I was reading this here:
http://www.centuryperformance.com/valveadjustment.asp
And it says:
I only ran the car for maybe a minute, I figured that was enough to pump up the lifters. I guess I need to go hook all the crap back up and run it for a little longer?
And, I guess once I shut it off, just loosen all the rocker arms, so none of them are forced to bleed down from valve spring pressure?

I was reading this here:

And it says:
Warm the engine by running it until it gets to operating temperature (15-minutes or so). Have all your tools ready and then quickly remove the valve cover(s) and start the adjustment procedure by using the chart above...
PRECAUTION: If you have an older high mileage engine that the lifters bleed off pressure (drain the oil out of). You can improperly adjust your valves. You need oil in the lifters to be able to get an accurate setting. If you repeatedly adjust the valves this way and they are still not correct, you probably have lifters bleeding off during adjustment. You have two options: Replace the Lifters -= or =- adjust the valves the "HOT" method as below.

When you set them with it running, is it still 1/16" of an inch with the Comp R's?
I need to see if I can figure a way to hook up this Delteq with everything and not have my wires in the heads.

Well I'm trying, but damn the fumes are KILLING me and burning the hell out of my eyes
I think I need my other fan for this. I have a feeling I'm going to burn my hands up pretty badly too during this process...At least the oil isn't spewing everywhere like I originally thought it would be.
But yeah, I need more fanpower...my eyes and lungs can't handle it no more
I might end up having to cut a wrench so I can manuever under there too...
I have my mech stethescope...so I can tell when the ticking goes away, and that's about the point where it's finger tight...so just a 1/16th turn past that eh?
These allen head locks are tighter than I thought they would be.
Just a heads up...I have the driver side valve cover mount setup...I was able to set the delteq on top of the intake and yank the valve covers off.

As for adjusting rockers, I've found that the engine running method works better for me. I loosen them up till they start clacking, then go about 1/8 or so past the point where they quiet down.

Yes, mine are Comp Rs. They seem fine with the above described procedure. I just did it a couple of weekends ago since one of the rockers came loose for some reason, so I did the whole side. Just make sure the car is somewhat warm when you do it. Mine didn't spit (out of the head area) any oil at all at idle.

"Something ain't right here"..."oh"...haha.I got the passenger side down, just need to do the driver side. So you go a whole 1/8th turn? I've only been going 1/12th...one tooth on my 12-pt wrench. These lifters are stupid, seems they're nothing but a PITA, and on top of that, I got the "kind" that like to break apart. Oh well, we'll see how this works, if need be I'll have to readjust them again. Now that I know what I'm doing it's not nearly as bad. I have a stethescope that I'm sticking against the jam nut, and turning the big nut til it stops clacking, then giving it ~1/12th of a turn with the wrench, and then tightening the jam nut against it. Thank god for GLOVES! My arms/hands are a bit toasty.

Still not running worth a ****, dunno what to do next.
Popping like mad through the exhaust, just trying to keep it running, as well as backfiring like out through the intake/MAF.
