valvetrain and cam questions

First, I can't find anywhere that says you need to use an LT1 specific camshaft. Can you use any SBC camshaft or does it have to be made for an LT1?

Second, I feel like my engine is going to go soon. It has 181,000 miles and has not been rebuild. I'd like to go with the CC306 camshaft when I do rebuild, so would I have to change the lifters, crank, pistons or anything? I know I'll have to change the valve springs and such. But what exactly should be done when changing to a CC306?

Third, what degree seats/locks or what ever should I get for the springs? As you probably noticed I'm not experienced with the valvetrain or anything.

And lastly, are LT1's 1 piece rear main seals or 2 piece?

Any help would be appreciated.

Check this out
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=400477

With that many miles i would save the money for it and put a new bottom end in it too unless its still in good shape once its torn down but i'd atleast re-ring and all that good stuff.
Iam pretty sure lt1's are one peice rear seal.

Thats all i know/think i know
Hope it helps some...

Re: Couple of minor questions

I don't know what any of the bottom end looks like so i won't know it's condition until i need to rebuild it. Would having it bored to 355 be a good idea too? or should it just need to be re-ringed and sealed? what about getting forged pistons? When i rebuild it i'd like to get it all done in one shot.

Re: Couple of minor questions

What about using any SBC cam in an LT1, or does it need to be LT1 specific.

Technically that doesn't answer my question. But I'll assume that means you need an LT1 specific cam.

Re: Couple of minor questions

Actually it does answer your question.... you need to have a stepped nose for the cam retention plate AND a hole in the nose for a Opti, meaning YES THE CAM IS SPECIFIC TO THE LT1..... not to mention the dowel pin length.

I thought so too? I suggest the book I posted a link to. It has good general rebuild information as well as answering a lot of the specific questions you have and many you haven't even thought of!
