copper header gasket leaking

I had paper gaskets which leaked, and i had them replaced, and they leaked, so I did some research and bought copper gaskets. I replaced the passenger side gasket myself, and now its leaking much worse.

I opened as much as I could to make sure the surfaces are clean and I couldnt see any bits of paper etc. left behind. I did this while the two end bolts were still on, so my visibility was limited. I made sure the bolts were really tight, but its still leaking bad.

I should have kept the old gasket to compare the sealing surfaces. Any suggestions, ideas??

thx

Get some felpro's and make sure the surface is very clean. Line it up and bolt em down...

I had the same problem with copper gaskets, I couldn't get them to seal properly. Instead I went with some Fel-Pro gaskets as mentioned above and haven't had any leaks in nearly 2 years now.

i think i figured it out

the copper gaskets i have are rounded squares, but it seems they should ahve given me one that has d-shaped holes. That must be the problem because i could see carbon on two corners of the gasket.

Personally I would get some dead sofl aluminum header gaskets. They are thick and soft, so they allow proper sealing of the headerss even if there are some manufactuing imprefections, which is usually why headers gaskets leak anyways.

It does sound like the wrong gasket, my mr. gasket copperseals were definitly D shaped.

I still could not get them to seal though because the SLP headers had a larger port opening than the raised crush lip on the gasket. The crease where the port intersected with the raised crush area would leak. I ended up with the felpros, work great for me.

They have to be the D shaped ones, When I ordered mine they sent me the wrong ones twice.
I guess someone was thinking they would help me out and send me the round ones casue I have a small block chevy.
My copperseals have not leaked yet.

I gave the dead soft aluminum collector gaskets a shot when I had to drop my y-pipe last winter. Blew them both out within 1 month.. Just my experience. I don't think I'd use the header gaskets of this type.
