cooling system throwing code

i hope someone can lend a helpful comment. ever since i bought my car every now and again, mostly when its around freezing outside, my car will throw a code and the cooling fans will kick on high like if the air sonditioning is turned on. it soinds like an airplane over the sound of the engine running with the fans blazing at high speed. it only does this every now and then, and the car isnt overheating at all. stock thermostat, stock tune.

Re: cooling system throwing code

Many codes will fire up the fans and don't have anything to do with the cooling system. You have to scan it to see what it is. You should also reset it and see if the same code appears again.

One other thing, some codes will not light the SES. Are you getting a light or just a code?

its giving me a light then the fans come on. im going to take it to autozone, but since its a 95 i dont know if they can scan it or not. it has been doing this before i did any mods, so nothing i have done has affected how often it happens.

AZ usually cannot scan a 1995 LT1 f-body. They think they can, because it has an OBD-II shaped DLC, but don't know that the computer is really OBD-I. They will likely (and incorrectly) tell you that your computer is bad or something.

As already mentioned, the fans come on because of the trouble code-not vice-versa.

The low coolant sensor is only connected to a light in the dash. It is not monitored by the computer and cannot cause a trouble code. If it is unplugged, the light on the dash will simply not function (lots of people unplug the sensor, because it is prone to intermittent failure). Whatever your problem was, you can be sure that did not fix it. It went away on it's own and will likely return. Typically, an SES that comes and goes on our cars is attributed to the EGR.

Re: cooling system throwing code

Is it possible you mixed up the "SES" light with the "low coolant" light? That sounds like the only logical explanation, since as Shoebox points out, the low coolant switch is not connected to the PCM.
