Cooling System Mystery

Background: I bought this car last November. When I got it, I went through and checked everything out - including the coolant. With the "floating *****" type tester it floated 4 of 5 ***** - good to -25 degrees F. For Tennessee, that's good enough. Nice green coolant and good color (buddy I bought it from had it changed not too long ago).

Fast forward to yesterday A.M. The temp was around 8 degrees F overnight and had been no colder than that yet this year here. I hadn't had the car started for about a week, so I decided to drive it into work. Frost on the windshield, so I started it and let it warm up. I let it run about 5 minutes. When I went to get in it, I noticed a puddle of nice green coolant rolling out from underneath - about a pint by my estimate. I popped the hood and took a look around. It looked like coolant was coming from around the upper left hand side (as facing the engine from the front) of the water pump near the throttle body bypass hoses. I had to get to work, so I went in our back-up car and just let the Camaro sit.

This morning I went to check it out and see if I could tell what the problem was. Again I popped the hood and took a look around. The puddle had largely evaporated and there was only a very slight trace of coolant on one of the hose clamps. I started the car and let it sit and idle - just as I had yesterday morning. I kept a look out for a leak, but there wasn't one. I drove it around a bit and looked again. Still nothing. The coolant level is only down slightly. The engine was up to full operating temperature, but there isn't a sign of a leak now. I'm stumped. Anybody?

Keep a close eye on it. The leak will eventually expose itself. You could try tightening the clamps.

lol Yeah, that's what I figured. It's just another aggravation, ya know. I haven't had the slightest concern with reliability with this car up until now. It just bugs me. I figure the best thing to do is just replace all the hoses. What is it, something like 12 hoses all told?

Do you or any of your friends have a Cooling System Pressure Tester?

It may help in finding the leak, just a thought

No, I don't have one. I think AutoZone has them to loan. I've used a makeshift tester on radiators before out of a section of bicycle inner tube. Might work on this. I'll have to dig around in all my crap and see if I can find one.
