Just unplug it and be done with it. They are common to fail, so why bother. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yea, and when your system level drops uncomfortably, you'll wish you
hadnt disconnected it. If no water runs across the gauge temp sensor,
it doesnt properly read "hot air" and may show everything is fine.

Did you try cleaing the old one? Sometimes that will help.

Shoebox shows two different GM part numbers in his parts list, based on the harness plug:

1994-1997coolant level sensor (2 way plug) - 10096163

1994-95 coolant level sensor (8 way plug) - 12135027

For future reference on part #'s:

Thats why you check it. Just like you should check your oil. Or your tire pressure. Its a good idea.

and for the OP, disconnect it, those parts are junk

Freak occurrences can happen too where a periodic check will be of little benefit. Considering what a new sensor costs or even the possibility that the old one can be cleaned and made functional, I don't see the big deal in fixing the problem.

To the OP... if you want to keep it, keep it. Its your car, do what you want with it.

Though the book lists one with an 8 way plug, I have never heard of anyone ever having one.
