coolant sensor ...2 or 3 wire?

I read a while back that there was some mod for the coolant temp sensor that changed the temp sensor from a 2 wire to a 3 wire, or vice versa . Can some one please explain this a little more? I believe the purpose was to have a more accurate temp reading on the gauge inside the car. I need to replace the temp sensor in the water pump. Is this sensor for the gauge or the PCM? Thanks,Shimaze
