I'm sure they do great work. I didn't delve too deep - mostly checked prices on short and long blocks. I'm assuming you have to send your short block to them for rework?

Everyone has their tolerance price-point for performance.

Personally, I can fair better on pricing. Let's compare their "LT1 383 CID Shortblock - CPE RACER 383 - $2,395". I've speced a comparable package, but *all* fully forged, with machining, for $500 less.

But it still looks like a good price. The other thing to research would be performance stats, customer service, and quality feedback.

CPE supplies all the blocks and does not require a core block!

Well where do I begin? I decided to build a 383 stroker and wanted an engine builder that would build an engine the way I would if i had their skill and knowledge. I didn't want to pay for someone that had a big name and would have a bunch of inexperienced people putting my engine together. I interviewed Jacob and took a shop tour before I would let him build my engine. Jacob is a stand-up individual that I trust 100%. I had advanced Induction do the top end and Cook Performance Engines build the bottom end and assemble the whole engine with their (2) year warranty. To make a long story short, I have a 6 speed manual with the factory 3.42 gear and can kill the tires at a 40mph roll. We are talking white smoke and pissing down my leg. Translation= The car is killer and owe it to Advanced Induction and Cook Performance Engines.

CPE sounds awesome and i have spoke to them too the only problem is they are kinda expensive but true they do not require a short or long block in return. If you want to save some time and money go to carolinamachineengines.com or cme they have builds from oil pan to valve covers 383 builds with four thirty horse power to five hundred for only forty three hundred or they have a 355 build with either 365 or 410 horses those are 2900 and 3900 and they mainly deal with chevy parts and have one certified technician complete the entire engine himself. the best deals and also if you just want the short block they have that for around seven hundred dollars they just require a core still the cheapest you will find and they warranty.

We encourage our members to use our Supporting Vendors.

It's unfortunate when someone feels they have to undercut the Supporting Vendors every time one of them is mentioned.

Those are really really poor numbers for a built motor. Put it this way, one "reputable" LT1 builder offers a 440hp stroker that only put down about 325rwhp which is a number easily attainable with a A4, tiny emissions cam and full emissions compliance. A properly done built motor should be on the order of 410rwhp+, meaning 500+ on most engine dynos.

If you are going to build a motor have a good shop do it, good shops are not cheap. Also do NOT go for the cast crank base offerings, they are WEAKER than stock. Too many guys have done the cast crank stroker thing and had them fail at low miles.

If it were me I would look at the CPE engine with the Compstar parts. Those are really nice parts at a reasonable price.

Some people don't know what it costs to build a nice engine. The cost of the parts is out of my hands.
Thanks for supporting CPE!

I believe it is Machinistone who likes to point out parts prices are pretty much equal to all shops. So when one shop is a lot cheaper they are cutting the cost on labor, which means taking shortcuts.

The crank probably broke because it is cast. I think anyone building an engine should just eliminate that from their parts offering. Its just asking trouble.

I talked to CPE a year or so ago, remember Jake i was the guy that had the jaw surgery? I was ready to pull the trigger, but needed some more time and i found someone else here that was able to get the parts cheaper. I bet they were stolen though..

i am sure its because the crank was cast but still doesnt change the fact of honoring the warranty i paid for. cast cranks are garbage!, but of course hind sight is 20/20.
