Is converting from 6 Speed to an Auto hard?
Is converting from 6 Speed to an Auto hard?
I had hip surgery and I can not drive stick as much any more. Is it hard to switch ovetr to auto? With my power do I need a special built tranny? What about the computer and tuning?
Any info or links would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Jason

An upgraded tranny would be a good idea. From what I know the hardest part of the swap is that you need an new M6 PCM wire set or M6 tranny wire set. AFAIK the A4 one wont work.
You will need to weld a plate or something over the existing hole that the shifter comes through.
Other than that it should be fairly straight forward.

What about things like drive shaft, flex plate, Cross Member parts to make the speedo work?
I would love if anyone had a linki or something to someone who has done it ir a site with a kit or anything.
Thanks guys.

A guy I know around here (kazman) switched from an M6 to a Turbo400 this year in his 95 Formula, here's one of his posts on the subject:

Jason,
Which trans do you plan on going with? If you want an overdrive, I recommend goind with a 700r4, not a 4l60e because then you won't have to worry about the computer controlling it. I'm in the midst of a 6speed to 700r4 swap right now (almost finished) and its really not that hard...
You need:
-700r4 (any year from 85-93 would be fine)
-Tailshaft out of a 93 Camaro and all brackets that hook up to it.
-A4 Crossmember from 4th gen
-153 tooth Flywheel (I have the B&M unit)
-Torque Converter
-Torque Converter Shield
-Driveshaft is the same as the M6
-TV Cable from 93 Camaro
-Accelerator and TV Cable Bracket from a 93 Camaro
-Lokar TV Cable bracket for the throttle body
-Cooler Lines (I made stailess cooler lines)
-Trans Cooler (get the B&M unit)
-Shifter (I got a B&M hammer)
-A4 Pedals
-VSS Speedometer Sensor with pigtail and reluctor gear to fit on the tailshaft (Might not need this depending on what year 700r4 you get)
Its pretty straightforward, the M6 comes out, clutch comes out, pilot bushing out of there and then put the 700r4 in its place. You have to hook up and adjust the TV cable and then do a little bit of wiring. Basically the wiring is when you step on the brakes, you want the converter to unlock. All of the wiring diagrams can be found at www.700r4.com You do need to drop the pan on the tranny and check out the wiring though so you'll get a better understanding of whats going on. I can help you with this if you need it.
As far as the shifter, I fabbed up an aluminum cover for the big hole in the console, put a metal brace over it and bolted the hammer shifter to it.
I'm going to take some pics of the swap soon and post up on the web an installation guide. So look for that from me soon. I still have to finish up my wiring and adjusting the TV cable.
But this should give you a general overview of what needs to be done.

The TH400 is great, except for one thing - no OD. Luckily, I run a 3.42 rear and I think it's gonna be ok, though I don't have many miles on it yet. If you drive the car a lot at high speeds, you are likely going to want OD. The two options for a super strong automatic and OD are both heavy and expensive. The 4L80E is GM's HD auto/light truck OD automatic. I can be made every bit as strong as a TH400, but is going to be somewhat more costly and it is bag and heavy. I have not seen one in a 4th gen, but I think it would require "cutting and pasting" of the transmission tunnel to make it fit. The other option is a TH400 plus a Gear Vendors OD. The GV is super strong, but heavy and expensive - over $2K new. That's the route I will go if I decide I can't live without OD.
One other thing, with your motor you absolutely don't want a 4L60E. Just not strong enough. There are some people who say they can make one live with a hi-po small block. I am somewhat skeptical of this, though if you are always on street tires it might work.

WOW great info you 2! Thanks a lot guys.
After all this thinking I think I will rough itout and keep the 6 speed. I dont drive the car very often and though it would be a simple cheap thing but I should have known better!
I guess it will be good excersize for my hip to press the clutch in.
