The converter shouldnt' be locked at WOT should it?

I thought that it only locked in 4th gear anyway, and the A4 is 1:1 in 3rd so it wouldn't lock up then anyway...

Actually the answer is no. The stock program commands the converter to stay unlocked at WOT. It might lock when you get it up to speed but once you go WOT for the pull it will unlock.

If you install a lockup switch or program it to lock at WOT (this is hard on the lockup clutch, can burn it up eventually) your HP will be higher...more comparable to an M6 dyno pull because you will be removing the power-robbing converter slip.

If you put the shifter into 3rd and cruise it will lock up in 3rd...but in normal driving it will go to 4th before it has as chance to lock in 3rd.

Very interesting. I had heard that it did, but wasn't really sure if it did or not.

Thanks

If it didn't lockup on a dyno pull wouldn't that distort the numbers? I was pretty sure it did lockup?

According to the tables in LT1 Edit at anything above 50% TPS in 3rd gear the converter will not lock. The same goes for 4th gear.

The fact that the converter does not lock is why A4 dyno numbers are always lower than the same setup with an M6.

Hell I guess that makes sense...kinda wierd I figured it'd distort torque numbers like crazy if it didn't lock up...guess I was wrong...

How would you go about installing a lock up switch for one of these to use at the track.Done it on a Buick GN before by just grounding a terminal on the ALDL connector. How are you guys doing it on these cars?

It's not designed to lock up under WOT and would probably break.

Agreed. You can wire up a switch for OBD1 cars easily, OBD2 it doesn't seem to work or work well. But like Rich said, I would not recommend making a habit of locking it under WOT..the clutch will eventually burn up and you'll lose your lockup all together.

VIgilante sells a multi-clutch disc converter if you want to lock up under WOT.

For the switch, just do a search for lockup switch...there are several posts on the subject.
