Completely Stumped (Rocker Problem)

All right I'm in the process of trying to fix my tapping rocker. I have the valve cover removed but with the motor running I can't tell which rocker it is. I even held up some hose to my ear and put it next to the rockers but cound'nt tell the difference. I untighented two that I thought might be the problem but I had to untighten them a lot and then they started making a clacking noise(a noise a lot different from what I'm hearing.) Then when I went to retighten them I tightend them until they stopped clacking, then went a 1/2 turn further. It feels like I didn't tighenten them as much as it took to loosen them.(Could that be a problem) Does anybody have any suggestions. Is a there an easy way to see if any of them are loose? Could there be anything else that could be making a consistent ticking noise, that is audbile from outside the car?

Only tried 2? Sounds like I can think of 14 other things to try

Other than that, you could try one of the 4 methods shoebox has on his site here

Re: Completely Stumped (Rocker Problem)

Well the reason I only tried two is because once they were loose they made a different kind of clanking sound. Then when I went to re-tighten them I wasn't sure how much to tighten them because of how long it took for me to re-tighten them. Somebody told me to untighten them until in clicks then tighten it till it stops then go a 1/4 inch more. But it took a lot of turns to untighten so I am a little worried that they will all be a little looser then they were.

All right I just went threw and loosensed, then retighted the whole passanger side, thats were the noise is coming from. But I still hear the ticking noise is there anything else I could do? I took off the drivers side valve cover and listened over there, and the noise is defenetly coming from the passenger side.

check your header bolts to see if the're tight, if they are you might have a bad header gasket
