By coming apart you mean the clips coming off the lifters? If that's the case, how and why does it create a power loss?

What valve springs were you using and do you know the PSI ratings?

Heres another one, older LE2 setup with 987 springs.. it span a cam bearing, not really a surprise after 15,000 fun filled miles on an 80k stock shortblock. Upon teardown one of the lifters had lost its clip, one piece in the valley and one in the pan.

No idea how long it ran with it like that, there was really no sign, no loss of power, no noise etc.. This was on a very carefully assembled and lashed valvetrain, regardless on the debate on why this happens I would never use them again.

Just an update. On my last engine teardown all my lifters are still good. Last 2k miles saw 7k rpm and 9xx rwhp.

Basically the 'jist' of this thread is. You must be absolutely perfect in your valve lash adjustment or these lifters are going to break. **OR** you can buy a better quality lifter and if you are off just a tad, you will be fine. I fall into the second category. I think I'll buy a better lifter personally.

no, the "jist" of this thread is, if you cannot properly lash your valves...you shouldnt be doing so...

or buy good lifters that have a reasonable margin for HUMAN error. I think a good majority of the guys here fall into that category. I am one of em.

My brother took apart the '94 Z28 and the comp R retaining rings came apart and are all over the engine. So there's another for the list.

So what better lifter are you referring to?

Took my manifold off today, and all lifters were good. I had pre loaded them cold originally, then adjusted them while running, barely turning them past clicking noise going away.
I am doing some work on her out of the car, and I will cold pre-load them per CompCams recommendations. Then I will re run her for a while, and see how she is. I think it is easy to over pre load them.
I did notice how the new retainer design is. Looks cheap. But how many people really have had issues with them. Hopefully I wont.

Morels ($450) or Caddy Racing ($228 from SDPC) probably......can't really go wrong with either.

Can the old and new lifters be taken apart? Reason I ask is, I have old ones (the good ones), and if I were to take them apart, what things besides the retainers would be different?

Pulled my intake the other day and all my comp r's were still together.
