Comp Cams Spring #977-16 Installed Height

Does anyone know off hand what the installed height is for comp cams 977-16 springs?

If not, does anyone know where I can find out? Like a reference guide or something...

also, I have an idea about how I am going to measure the installed height. I don't have a micro meter, so I was thinkin I would try this...

If I get a dowel rod (made of wood) and cut it to the exact install height and then drill a hole down through the center which is big enough for the valve stem to fit through, and then extend that hole out to the outer edge, could I use that to properly measure each of the springs height... I would measure by placing the retainer and locks in place and lifting them up. Once they are into position, I would slide the down rod piece in from the side and shim as necessary until it is snug...

Here is an example to illustrate what I'm trying to say...

What do you think? Will that work?

1.850-1.875" was recommended to me by Craig Gallant for my GTP cam. I needed a +.050" lock set to get the spring to 1.850 on my stock valves.

All you are doing is measuring the height, so as long as your homemade setup is accurate, it will work. However, a valvespring mic is only ~50 bucks, and you are likely to re-use it. I'd get the tool.

However, I like having cool tools in my closet .

oh i'd love the tool also, but I am broke as hell at the moment, cause of buying parts, and pullers, and stuff, so I can't even afford that measly $50 for the micrometer... I'll definately get one in the future, but for this project, I think I'll just make the homemade gauge...

The spring manufacturer should have spring pressures listed by installed height. The pressure should be matched to your cam/valvetrain needs by someone qualified to advise you (that ain't me ).

Here is the info I have on the springs...

Part #: 977
Desc: 1.460
Max Lift: .700
Seat PSI: 160@1.850
Open PSI: 440@1.250
Coil Bind: 1.200

I guess that means I am shooting for 1.850" on the install height...

Thanks for the input though guys...

No, you set the installed height according to how much seat pressure you want. 160lb may or may not be right for your application.

Thanks Rich,

I fired an email to atljar to see what seat PSI he used with his 847, and I'll probably give comp cams a call here in a few to see what they have to say about it...

Thanks for the input...

I just talked to comp cams. They said I wanna get the seat pressure down to about 130psi with my hydraulic roller cam. They said I'll need to have an installed height of about 1.900"...
