Code 46

Since I did my cam swap the car has barely run at all, in the beginning it would occasionally start and blow smoke while desperatly trying to not stall(with my foot on the gas). I just put a new timing chain in the other day in hopes of finding my problem, no luck everything appears fine. Today I flashed the codes all that came up was 46 which is "Check for faulty circuit from ignition switch to theft deterrent module or ECM/PCM" What do you guys think? I don't appear to be getting spark although the car cranks fine.

Question

How would I test for spark at the coil?

Is the security light constantly on? Since your car is cranking, it may not even be bothering anything.

Check for spark by pulling or using an old plug and stick it on the end of a plug wire. You will have to lay the outside metal of the plug to ground, crank and see if you get a good blue spark.

Are you sure you are getting the opti on correctly? This is a 1993? Did you like up the splines correctly?

No the security light does come on occasionally but the car will not crank at all when it is on. I checked for spark on the #1 plug several times and got no spark at all Yep, I have had the opti off twice now and both times I was careful to line up the splines on the gear properly in both the cam gear and opti. I have tried a new coil and ICM with no sucess.

You might want to try this then. Check your IGN fuse.

I just checked for spark at the coil(with a new wire and plug) I am getting a good blue spark from the coil while cranking the engine. However it is not making it to the plugs in the engine??? Should I just get a new opti?

Any possibility that the coil wire is bad? You said you used a new wire for the coil test. If spark is going into but not coming out of the opti, then it sounds like opti time (or at least cap and rotor).

I actually just replaced the coil wire... so it should be good. Yeah, I figured it was time to replace it. The car was allways hard to start and I had a miss above 5000rpm... I guess in the time the opti was off the car it decided to bite the dust.
