code 36

Car has been hard to start lately, missing every once in a while, and died while it was sitting there idleing the other day. ( 95 six speed) I scanned it and is came up with a code 36. What should I check before I throw a new opti in it. What needs to be checked?

Sounds like it's the opti. Code 36 is High Resolution Pulse failure.

Yep, check the price on a new opti.
I'm sorry man... It definetely sounds like the opti to me, judging by how it died.

That sucks.
Just to clarify, it did restart after it died. It was just weird that it died while it was sitting there idleing.

The engine will run fine with DTC 36 active... the PCM defaults to the low res pulse for ignition timing. It only shuts the engine down if it can't find the low resolution pulse, and that would show DTC 16.

Clear the code, and see how soon it comes back. If it returns, check the harness connection at the Opti, and the test connection - gray 4-wire connector on the bracket on the passenger side of the intake maifold. If the connectors get corroded you can get the codes. Also look for any plug wires running too close to the Opti harness.... the high voltage interference from a leaky plug wire can throw the pulse counts off.

Yestarday I would clear the code and the SES light would come back on immediatly. I just went back out today and fired it up, and now I don`t get the SES light and it ran fine at first, but after it warmed up for a few minutes it is missing and backfiring and crap like that.
It has never done that before and it is even weirder that I am not getting the SES light.
What the heck does that sound like?
