CNC Heads, how to...?

hey everyone, i was just thinking, about exactly what kind of machines CNC the heads, becuase, my Dad owns a small machine shop with a couple of CNCs. Also does anyone know of, or have a premaid program that i could possibly use on one of Dads CNCs to do my heads? Hope this post made sense, and thanks for any help/advise given in advance.

To do a good job, you need a 5 axis machine. The big catch is having a program to do it. These aren't just simple programs, they are usually started off of a known good port, and then getting the machine to do exactly what you want isn't the easiest thing to do either.

Re: CNC Heads, how to...?

i run 3 cnc mills for a living and i wouldnt dream of doing a set of heads without a 5 axis mill. like tqdrivenws6 said, getting the machine to do exactly what you want will be difficult. given that the heads are aluminum, you would have to make sure you have the proper tools to cut aluminum and make damn sure you dont mess up. also getting the heads set up would be quite a chore, although it could be done. it would be a pretty lengthy set-up. i think i would rather pay somebody who has done it before to do it, that way if they get messed up it's their *** not your dads!!!

Yeah it's really in depth and it's late here but basically the fee for a CNC shop to digitize a intake, exhaust and chamber is around $2000-$3000, sometimes that includes a set of head castings with the ports in them sometimes not.
