Checkin transmission fluid

Well, i recently had my pan gasket replaced at a local shop that always does great work. But now I am getting a bigger leak. I checked the pan gasket and it looks pretty dry. Looks like the transmission fluid is dripping off of the oil pan or the silver lookin part behind the oil pump, not sure what it is (sorry don't know the parts that well yet) looks like it's still part of the trans. Anyone know where this leak could be coming from and why does the manual make checkin the fluid level so difficult?

Is it leaking where the shaft comes out of the rear? That would be the rear seal.Checking the fluid is simple.Check it at normal operating temp on a level surface.Park or nuetral.Doesnt matter which.

Needless to say this is with the motor idling...
there is a cold/hot level on the dipstick according to operating temp..

Well, i checked the fluid level and it looks as though the level is ok but i am getting a pretty good amount of tranny fluid on my garage floor. I looked on the invoice and it said that 5 qt of trans fluid was added but i believe the tranny only takes 4, is this correct or am I wrong, and if it was overfilled could that be causing this leak?

yeah, i have never had a car i can't check my tranny fluid on properly. i have to guess at it. the dipstick sucks and you can't read the fluid level accurately for ****. i totally agree with you man. i got a leak, yet it seems the dipstick says its full. so i know its bull****.

Well, i took it back to my shop and they found some kind of shift seal that was leaking just above the oil pan. Driver side. The seal is about the size of dime. So i'llhave them replace it and see what happens.

When checking fluid level, make sure you are on flat ground. When reading the dipstick, read "both" sides, the side that reads the lowest is the true reading. As for leaks, wipe down everything around the pan area, above & below, then go back in an hour or so, or when you know it is starting to leak and use a white or blue paper towel to dab around and check to see where the leak is coming from. Most "so-called" pan gasket leaks are not the pan gasket at all, as you will find out.
