Ok I have a problem with the check engine Light. I have a 1994 Z28 Camaro and after driving for a little bit the light comes on and it sounds like a fan comes on. If you stop at a stop light it goes off and then would eventually comes back on. I tried the paperclip thing and with the paperclip in the light doesnt come on at all just that fan sounding thing. Can anyone help? I am pretty sure one of the O2 sensors is bad, but I would like to make sure before I get one. Also, am I doing something wrong with the way I am putting the paperclip in or something? Thanks.

 

You are not having a problem with the check engine light, but a trouble code that it is trying to tell you about. You must use a scanner to retrieve the code. A paper clip will not work on 1994 and later.
BTW, the fans come on with most trouble codes, so that is why you hear it. Get it scanned and find out what the issue is.

 

I went to Autozone and they said that they couldnt test 1996 and earlier or something like that. So how can I get it checked for free? I am a college student and dont really have alot of extra money. The last time I had to get something checked it was like 700 dollars. Please help. It also is getting terrible gas mileage.

Well I dont mind saying where I am from, but its pretty small place. I am in Stuarts Draft Virginia. I seen somewhere on the web that they can scan older ones if you have the adapter thing. Does my car have that adapter?

 

You have an OBD-I style car, they were probably saything that they can only scan OBD-II style cars. Your car still does have a diagnostic port in which a scanner can be plugged into.

 

I knew mine was OBD I, but I seen someone say that they had the OBD I and that they took it in and for that particular year it worked or something.

 

It must be scanned with a scanner or scanning software capable of OBD-I scanning. There is no way around it. It sucks to be poor, but unless someone close by can help...

 

LOL I am not poor, I just need to use my money for tuition maybe. I dont mind paying for it, I was just curious if there was a way to get it scanned free. Wow though, just being a student makes you poor. What a sad world.

Your 1994 has an OBD-I computer, and has an OBD-I ALDL connector. Period.

The 1995 has an OBD-I computer, and an OBD-II "style" 16-pin ALDL connector. You can scan your car with an OBD-I scanner. Scanning a 1995 requires an OBD-I scanner, and an adapter to connect the 12-pin scanner plug to the 16-pin ALDL plug.

Hey gunz - I've been a broke college student before and know EXACTLY how it is. Any ways, I'm willing to bet that the Zone can scan your car and they just don't know it. Around here (Roanoke, VA) they use Actron scanners which can scan OBDI and II cars. They use the same scanner with different cables for I and II. If the Zone in Stuarts Draft can't scan for you, give the Advance and/or Zone in Charlottesville a call and see if they can do it.

So Advanced Auto does it too? All I have seen is Auto Zone for free. Just curious
