cheaper to build your own short block, or go and buy one?
just crunching some numbers, and i am wondering if it is cheaper to build your own short block, or is it cheaper to go through an engine builder that has them already built. I am looking at a 355 or 383 to hold 10lbs of boost.

From what I found around here, it was cheaper to go with a local shop. What kept from going with any of them was how disgusting they were. Every single one was a total mess. I can't stand that in a machine shop, personally.

It's the machining and the parts that are expensive. Most builders are only charging $3-400 for engine assembly, so that's the max you will save. But if you know how to do it, have the time, tools, and space, why not? But don't try to fake your way through it for a few hundred dollars. Improper assembly can turn thousands of dollars of parts into scrap in no time!
