I'd really inspect the original closely and consider reusing it before using a cheap Chinese junk set.

Cheap is a seriously bad idea in a timing set.

If you're set on replacing the set, consider using a Cloyes set. they're a tier one supplier to GM and may have been the OEM manufacturer of the stocker. The part number I found was C-3228 but double check to be sure...

Cloyes manufacturers in the US...

Re: Cheap good timing set

Why do you think you need to replace it?

Pretty much nobody breaks stock chains even on modified engines and then when guys replace them I think I have seen more replacements break than stockers. The stock one is meant to handle the load of the waterpump so it was pretty heavily built.

Oh, I'm just shopping around for possibly a timing set for my heads and cam swap. But seeing these are not many options for a timing set I thought I would share this. I'm not gomna replace gears and chain till I look at mine.

Re: Cheap good timing set

If looking for an "upgrade" I might consider the Lunati set but I have no data to support it being an upgrade, otherwise stock/cloyes.

Just get a new chain($40) for your existing gears, the LT1 sets are a rip-off.

Again, just get a new chain, then use an offset bushing kit to degree your cam and save the $200

You don't need to buy a $280 three keyway set to degree the cam, those things rarely fall into the right spot anyways. Most builders all use offset bushings on the camshaft like I said in the first post - those kits cost $20 and are easy to use, that's what I use even when I have a three keyway set in my hands, it's faster to swap the bushings than it is to pull a pressed on gear on and off.

yes, you drill out the holes to accept the bushings. here's a link to how: http://www.jegs.com/InstallationInst...70-11991-1.pdf

I actually don't drill the hole all the way through like it says in those directions, I drill it from the back side just enough that the bushing will drop in and be below flush - this way it is captured and has no possible way of coming out the front side and you don't need to buy a lock plate.

And that's why you talk to a machinist before drilling or cutting......
Great idea!
