Changing throttlebody, simple plug-n-play?
Changing throttlebody, simple plug-n-play?
Is changing the throttlebody and easy task? or more involved than just a simple replacement? Are there any necessary adjustments to the throttle cable (or such) or are they generally "set" by the factory? When purchased new aftermarket, are the directions generally straight forward or do you need previous experience to do the job right? TIA -Jeff
Usually just P&P, however it depends on the A-Market TB. If larger than 52MM, you will have to
port the Intake.
I got the AS&M 52MM (reworked 48MM). Went on w/o a hitch. Included instructions too.
Some A-Markets might not be adjusted precisely and may need a little adjustment.
I believe some of the Holley's might fit that category.JMHO

Thanks for the responses...
Yes, it is an A4, and yes, I was thinking of going to a 52mm. So could that reprogramming be done w/ something like the Hypertech Programmer? or would it have to be custom? Is the intake porting necessary? as I thought they were already slightly overbored? ...tho, I could be wrong? Would it be emissions testing friendly?

you shouldnt need to bore any bigger for 52mm as the holes behind the stock should be that size. I didnt do the t/b swap on my car (it was already on it when I bought it) , but I did take it off and apart to clean the t/b and IAC solenoid. It was not very hard at all even for a mechanically challenged person as I myself. The biggest pain in the *** is getting the coolant hoses off as even after the clamps are losened the hoses are still on very tight. Id say go for it. Depending on where you live you might wanna go ahead and to the t/b coolant bypass , not only for cooler temps but so you dont have to ever deal with those damn hoses again lol.
I have a BBK/Edlebrock 52mm TB. It's a pretty simple install. Just taking one thing off and putting another on. Be careful with the throttle cable and the intake elbow. Try not to stretch the cable or tear the ends of the elbow. Other than that, it's a fairly easy install. People say you don't need programming for a 52mm TB but I have first hand experience that you do. I still need it in fact. The shifting will be a little different...kinda like it's shifting too easy and way too soon. I woulr recommend getting a tune for a even a 52mm TB. I am gonna be contacting MadWolf about that pretty soon.
I have a 52mm Holley I threw in with motor and all upgrades. PCMforless did the tuning on it. Total rebuild and upgrades went off without a hitch. Most are plug and play. If it don't work to well get a program done from Madwolf or PCM4less.
As far as the Holley thing, I have heard that to but didn't have any problems with mine that i know of. What are some of the problems experienced???

The 58mm Holley I got was "sloppy". The blades were a very loose fit in the body, allowing too much air to bypass when closed. The throttle stop lever was not firmly attached to the cable quadrent, and caused erratic TPS readings. I had to hammer the blades slightly to enlarge them, then hand file/polish to get the correct spacing around the edges. Then I pinned the stop lever to the quadrent. Shouldn't have to do that to a $350 (what I paid for it, just before the price went over $400) piece. Does look nice though, with a little polishing.
Pretty sure the stock intake has 54mm TB bores. AS&M makes a 54mm TB just for that reason.
Shouldn't need any programming in an M6 car. Install should include an adjustment of the throttle stop to insure you have the correct idle speed, and the correct IAC counts. Then verify TPS voltage and adjust if required. Adjustment will require slotting the holes in the TPS sensor.
