Changing oil pan gasket?

I am trying to get the oil pan gasket out of the car with the motor still in it...is it possible to get it out from over the k-memeber without pulling the engine....I don't want to have to pull it again.....Thanks for any comments

Yes. I've done mine that way and I know from research that a few other guys have done theirs the same way. It's a little easier if you jack the motor up off of the motor mounts but I didn't even do that. You'll get about an 1' or maybe 2" to work with. You basically install the gasket by stretching it around the pan by sliding the front part of the gasket over the front part of the pan leaving the back part of the gasket "outside" of the pan. You then work the back around the bottom of the pan and up in to place. The oil filler tube is a bit of a PITA but I sliced the gasket on the inward side so that I could just put it "through" so to speak. I haven't had any leaks. Pay close attention that you get the front and rear seal perfect because if it's gonna leak that's where it will do it. Good Luck. I would call this an annoying job, not a particularly hard one.

So i should cut the gasket and silicone it back together? What about the pick up tube in the oil pan....you can't just pull the oil pan off if you jack the motor up?

No don't cut the whole gasket. I'm talking about the little ring that goes around the oil pan dipstick tube only. I cut the "backside" of this ring, the gasket is still in one piece. I think you could work it around the dipstick tube if you had the patience and skinny fingers. I just didn't want to mess with it.

You're right you don't completely remove the pan you just drop it about an inch or two and pull the gasket up around the outside of the pan, you don't slide the gasket in between the pan and the block because the pickup would get in the way. Think of it more as stretching the gasket around the outside of the pan and then putting it between the pan and the block.

It is not tough at all to jack the motor and I am sure it is much easier if you do it that way. I was able to pull the pan out and replace it as well by doing it this way.

Good luck.
