changing front shocks

Can someone tell me how invovled is the process of changing the front shocks. My haynes manual said the master cylinder has to be separated from the booster. Will the brakes have to be bleed if this is done? Are these really struts and will I have to get the springs put on the new struts? What size torx will i need for the torx screws holding the top of the front shocks?

What shocks does everybody recommend? Are edelbrocks worth the money?

Would a tire with an h speed rating cause a 94 z 28 to ride rougher than the original z rated goodyears?

Thanks for the input.

ok well changing them is not a hard process if you know your way around a little bit. it's just the 4 top strut bolts, and a couple below. not sure on the torx size.
and as far as what kind my vote would be hals. those run about 170 a peice then 50 for the spring. you got 12 adjustments that will work for any setting you want.

If you are going to be driving mainly on the street, Bilsteins or something similar might be better. The Hals do have lots of adjustability, but they are not a gas charged shock and provide a rather firm ride in all but the softest settings. The front Hals are also height adjustable if that matters to you.

Look at Injuneer's page for a shock install walk through and there are some pics on the photos page.

thanks for the replies, are the q - shocks more expensive than the edelbrock shocks?

any one have the cooper cobra zhp01 tires on their cars?
this is one of the tires i am looking at.

If the opti is going bad will any dash lights come on? or what are some other definite signs?

The shock install is not that bad. The toughest part is compressing the front springs. Autozone has a deal here where you can buy the tool necessary to compress the springs then return when you are done for a full refund.

If you are doing mostly street driving are even some drag racing, auto-x or road racing, then the Bilstein's are an excellent shock for the money.

While the Hal's are a great shock as well they are considerably more expensive.

I use the Bilstein's and use my car for mostly track stuff and they have performed flawlessly.

Torx50, spring compressors, 13/16" for the compressor (I like a wracheting wrench and long handled crecent), you dont need to bleed the brakes.

Depends.... if the high voltage section (cap & rotor) is dieing, there are no codes set, no SES light. If the optical section is bad, it will set codes DTC 16 and 36. The SES light should come on for DTC 16, unless it is intermittent on startup. Can't remember if DTC 36 turns on the light, but once these codes are set, they are stored, even if the problem goes away. They can be retrieved with a scanner.

thanks for the input guys. i appreciate it very much.

the q shocks are too much for my buget. i will probably go with bilestein shocks or something in that price range.

I went to a new car show this weekend and was looking at the 50th ann. corvette and the plugs are so accessible, i think goober pyle from mayberry could change them. it made me kind of mad to think what we have to go through with these lt 1 cars.
