Cc503 vs my TPIS

Ok so I finally got to tear into my engine and I found out my lt1 already has a cam in it. It's the TPIS 700-136 cam. I have a brand new CC503 camshaft on my shelf I planned to put in. How much bigger is my CC503 compared to this TPIS cam and will I gain power, if so how much. Or lose power

TPIS Cams
Model Number .05" Duration 1.5:1 Lift 1.6:1 Lift Lobe Sep. Notes
700-136 212/226 .483/.520 .515/.554 112deg ZZ9 Cam

CC503 Operating Range: 1800-5800 RPM
Duration Advertised: 276° Intake / 281° Exhaust
Duration @ .050'': 224° Intake / 230° Exhaust
Valve Lift: .503'' Intake / .510'' Exhaust
Lobe Separation Angle: 112°

Is it even worth swapping? I'm also putting on Ported lt1 heads/ intake manifold and 1.6 rockers. I have shorty headers.

PortedHeads have the crane 10308-1 kit. And idk what springs my stock heads have.

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

I would say that the two cams would be comparable with the 503 having a bit of an edge up top while the TPIS might give you a bit more down low. It's probably not enough to even notice.

However, how could you NOT know you have an aftermarket cam in the car? Doesn't it sound noticeably more aggressive than stock?

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

I at first thought I had one because of the way it sounded. But I asked the owner before me and he said they didn't do a camshaft and other people told me the car sounded stock.

Plus when I had it dynoed I only put 265hp to the wheels. Even though I had a weak fuel pump and a burnt spark plug wire. But after I fixed those 2 and put in an lt4 knock module an 3600 stall I went from a 9.4-9.6 to a 8.6 in the 1/8

I told you back in April it was cammed and that something was wrong. Now we know the truth. A lesson for the untrained ear. As far as the 2 cams the 503 is far superior and will make more power across the board. The ZZ-9 is slightly smaller and possibly older than the hotcam. You may want to re vamp your exhaust also.

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

I always thought it was cammed. It's just so many people told me other wise and the owner said they didn't put one in. But it did get into a lope sometimes so I always thought I did.

Does 8.6 sound right for the cam I had plus a 3600 stall in the 1/8?

And do y'all think that TPIS cam will work with stock springs? If so I might give it to my girlfriend to put in her z28. I can give her my old springs to if the stock are to weak.

Ok well I'm glad my CC503 wasn't a waste of money

You think my edelbrock shorty headers are choking the engine and holding it back?

To me an 8.6 seems a little on the slow side. I manage 8.1 stock with a bit more weight. I don't think the stock springs are up to the task of the zz9 and I would run 26918 beehives with the 503. If you run the shorty header a 2 1/2" X-pipe with dual Magnaflows work well. There are many factors for a good 1/8 time, the right combination seems to vary from car to car.

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

Hmm, I've already got the crane 10380-1 spring kit.

I'll probably give my GF my zz9 and springs or sell if she doesn't have time. I'll work on an exhaust setup eventually. Gonna stick with H/C for now

The Crane 10308-1 kit will work as well.

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

Ohh man.....

Does the rest of the lobe look normal? If so, I'd guess a heat treatment problem from the manufacturer. Nothing but junk now.

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

yes rest of the lobe looks normal its on 2 lobes,

and guess what i found when i took old springs off. one with a broken inner spring and what looks like I dont even have a valve seal. Could this have been why my car seemed to of lacked power and burnt oil on the down rev? (There is a spring cup, its just not in the pics)

Re: Cc503 vs my TPIS

Glad to see you found the problem and I'm sure it would hinder the performance. Thanks for sharing the info.
