I am putting in a cc306 soon and I was wondering do I replace just the timing chain itself, or get the whole timing chain kit?

Get a Cloyes Double Roller chain and an electric waterpump. You will come out a little bit cheaper and will add a few extra hp. If your car has a non-vented opti, you will have to do a vented opti conversion.

Depending on how it was maintained you should be able to do just the chain. It's cheap, the real money is in the cam gear. The only question is the continued longevity of the stock timing set when running against the increased spring pressures that the 306 requires.

Just get the whole kit. The gears wear too, not just the chain.

Replace it as a set. You may even want to look into something sturdier like the LT4 ED set to go along with that higher reving cam.

I went to the cloyes, and man is it a night and day difference in comparison to the stocker. WAY less slack and much stronger design. Plus no need for the extra WP gearing junk on the back once youve swapped over to EWP. Better safe than sorry, but if your on a budget, you can only do so much.
