for a friend: a 383 or 396 with CC306 cam?

my friend has a 94 A4 Z28. he wants to do a stroker motor on a budget. he wants to use the CC306 cam, is there any advantge with the CC306 in a 396 over 383 specially for the low end torque? assuming each stroker has the same professionaly ported stock LT1 heads, Hooker LT's, PCM tunning.....etc.

1- by the way for the cam, is there a better cam than the CC306 for a 383 LT1 or a 396 LT1 motor?

2- also will a cam clear forged steel scat 6" I-beam rods in a 383 or i will need a small base circle cam? how about the cam clearing eagle 6" H-beam rods in a 396?

thanks

If he's doing it on a budget, he'll have to go with a 383. There are a variety of cast 383 cranks available, but you will have to step up to a forged crank if you want a 396. There will typically be about 1 rwhp, 1 rwtq gain per cubic inch, so thats only about 15 hp for stepping up to the 396 for about $700 difference. I guaruntee if you put that $700 into the heads, you'll get a bigger gain. I'd also run a custom cam based on how the heads turn out, rather than just picking a shelf cam.

can i still use the stock oil pan with the 396? i know that i can use stock oil pan with the 383, isn't that right?

i thought with the 396 i will have about the same hp but much more torque than a 383?

I have a 383 w/ the 306, its streetable for sure. Also the 306 clears my forged scat 6" I-beam rods.

Camaro37, is the 306 cam you have a small base circle cam?

also do you have any 1/4 mile times for your 383 and the CC306 cam?

what are your mods?

thanks

Camaro37, thanks for the reply. for how much you got your 383 stroker kit? :

1- what is the price of rods?
2- price of crank?
3- price of pistons?
4- bearing and rings?
5- balancing?

thanks

And if he's really on a budget, the stock resized 5.7 rods will work fine too. Polish the beams, use good rod bolts, no problem...

what does resized rods mean?

also when they balance the crank do they balance it alone? or they take into account rods and pistons weight?

what i wanted to say is that can i use my 5.7 stock rods with the scat crank and pistons and just the crank being balanced?

I don't like the cc306 cam.

I have a 383 and went with an XE 230/236 which many guys have seen as making more midrange hp in a 350 than the cc306. Its a very streetable cam

I would get an XE 236/242 with R-lifters though for a bit more power.

When I worked at L&B performance, I did a 396 with a 306 and the car is VERY streetable. Streetable like a hotcam in a stock bottom end. Corey Hawkins' 396 (back in '97 or '98) was the same way with his CC306. Idled like a hotcam motor.

I personally think that the CC306 cam is too small for a 396 you could go with a bigger cam and still be streetable and make alot of power.

If he is gonna choose, tell him to do a 383 with either the CC306 or the XE 236/242 like Grip suggested. It will be very streetalbe and make great power.

can this 383 with 306 cam trap 120 mph or more and do mid 11's? the stock ported LT1 heads flow pretty good with high port velocity 270 cfm.

if i go with the stock unmachined 5.7 rods will they clear a 306 small base circle cam?

also will this 383 live long with 5.7 rods?
