Catback recomendations w\ big cam, headers and no cats...

Just got my heads and cam in and my exhaust is way way to loud. I have a XE 230/236, headers, no cats and a loudmouth. One word describes it DEAFENING. I need a catback to tame this beast. But hopefully not one were it will rob a lot of HP. So if you know of any quiet cat backs that don`t rob much HP let me know Please!

One word: Hooker

You can get this cat-back for $250 brand-new. It flows well and sounds great without cats. It'll be much quieter than your LM(but with a far better tone).

Man that sounds perfect, have you heard it on a heads and cam car or just on bolt-on cars. Just curious because my LM was tolerable on my bolt-on only w\ headers and no cats, so hopefully the hooker is a lot quieter.

I think the hooker might still be louder than you want. Maybe try magnaflow? some poeple actually complain thats too quiet.

I too love my 2OTL, but i can't recommend it to someone with a T/Abecause of the rear ground effects. It's a camaro and formula only exh IMO.

Trust me, the Hooker cat-back will be WAY quieter than the LM on your existing set-up. Just deeper in tone and a LOT more refined sounding. It flows good too.

And the Hooker isn't any louder than the SLP 2OTL or Magnaflow either. They are all quiet at idle/cruise, but really wake up at WOT.

I love the 2OTL tone(and look on a Camaro), but I just think the Hooker sounds the best without cats(not too much rasp compared to other systems out there). But if ya want an even quieter sound with no rasp, then you'll need to run cats instead of offroad pipes no matter what cat-back system you run.

I had the same problem, but with a Hooker cat-back. The car was really loud and raspy. I just added a hi-flow 3" cat on Saturday, and it's definitely a lot more liveable now. It sounds really good. I would guess it's a bit louder than the car was without the heads, cam and headers. I was just tired of the noise and not wanting to rev the car for fear of getting pulled over.

I live in California, so removing a cat is a bigtime fine here. They had a big sign on the wall at the muffler place saying that removing or tampering with the cat is subject to a fine of $2,500.

The strangest thing was that the car feels stronger on the low end with the cat on there. I guess adding a bit of backpressure helps the torque. It still feels the same on the top end, though.

My only concern is how long the cat is going to live. With the cam, it's going to run rich at low RPM. I don't know that there's much that can be done to get it to the right AFR at idle. I am getting a bit of a sulfur/rotten egg smell at idle. Anyone else have this? (not to steal the thread)

I thought about putting the high flow cat on there but like you i have no air pump anymore, at startup you are going to be in enrichment mode and killing that cat. So for me I think thats out of the question.

I`m thinking maybe hooker cat back and adding a dynomax bullet after the cat (I have an empty cat w\ a pipe through it) before the hooker catback, sorta a double whammy, what do ya`ll think?

I have an SLP dual/dual muffler for sale with tips in the FS section.

I run a stock GM WS6 mufler on my cam'd car, and it is pretty quiet. A friend runs the SLP dual/dual muffler on his headers/boltons/no cats LS1 and it is very quiet - almost sounds like stock at idle.

isn`t the slp dual dual the same as the ws6 muffler?

I think that sounds like a great idea. I run a bullet ORP, in volume it's closer to a straight ORP than my high flow cat, but it really cleans up the sound quality a LOT. Maybe you should try a borla resonator, i think Fred (injuneer) said that cuts more noise tahn the dynomax bullet.

No, they are different. The WS6 is a GM option. Only the SS and Firehawk get the SLP parts.

The WS6 and 'stock' SS exhausts ARE the same. This exhaust is also known as the single/single exhaust because of its two single exhaust tips. Also, the GM exhuast is a 2.75" diameter catback while the SLP dual/dual is 3".

Hope that clears it up. Here's a link with a link of the pic of the catback. I am selling the muffler only.
