Catalytic converter code 0420

Just got a service engine soon light...scanned and found "catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1...P0420. Can anyone give my suggestions of the fix for this code? Could this be a tank of bad gas or something easy? Which side is bank one? Please respond if you have an idea! Thanks in advance. Jay

"Bank 1" is the left (drivers) side. The code could indicate a dead cat, or it could be a problem with the after-cat O2 sensor. You could swap the after-cat sensors between the right and left sides to see if the problem follows the sensor = faulty sensor, or stays on Bank 1 = faulty cat.

Of course you can't just "gut" the cats on a 96 unless you get "sims" for the after-cat sensor positions, or have the after-cat sensors programmed out of the PCM.
