Car won't start! Need help now! Stuck at U of Evansville
Ok first of all, right now I'm 4 hours away from my home. I have SOME tools but it's fairly limited. Last weekend on saturday during the day, my car started missin out in the upper rpms. It was fine if you didn't drive it hard so I figured no big deal, I'll just replace that pos opti when I get home. Then saturday night, it started diein when you went to stop but for a few times it would start right back up. Then finally, It died again and wouldn't start back up. Classic case of pos opti I thought. So I had to park it at this dealership for the week. Today, after I got a new optispark, I came back down to fix this ****. Well, I'm having to work on this pos in the ****in snow outside, in the dealership's lot. After we got the new optispark in and double checked everything, we went to start the car. It cranks over but will not fire. So we double checked everything. Everythings perfect, the way it should be. So we're at a loss. I know it has spark, (Or else it wouldn't of backfired right?) We've also tried switching to my buddies icm and coil. Still no dice. All the wires are where they should be. I can hear my fuel pump prime so I'm pretty sure it has fuel. I don't have a fuel pressure guage so I can't test it and Autozone won't even loan one out and a new one costs $35 so I can't afford that. (have barely enough money to eat the next 2 days and for gas for these 2 gas-guzzlers home.) And I don't have anythign to check and make sure its getting spark but since it is a new opti and I've tried swapping out icms and coils I'm pretty sure thats not the case. Any suggestions? Sorry about the rambling jsut tryin to mention everything and get some help. Thanks everyone.
Wow, well it sounds like you have thought of everything that I can think of.. Doesn't sound like a fuel problem to me. I would definately check the IGN fuse like shoebox said. It would be nice to really know that you are actually getting spark. Like from the plugs. Check all the fuses, the ECM fuse also.
You may have put the cam dowel in the wrong slot on the opti. It's possible if it didn't want to fit on smoothly.
If there was any resistance, it's probably on wrong. You can pull a plug wire and hook a regular spark plug into it (so you don't have to actually remove a plug from the head). Lay the plug on a piece of bare metal like the strut bolts or something similar. Crank it over and if the plug sparks, you know it's a timing or fuel issue.

Well actually... I am stupid enough to do that, I guess
. I was 100% certain that I had the optispark right, however after removing and reinstalling the opti, the car started right up and runs great now! Before I removed it, I made sure that the opti was FLUSH with the timing cover. And it was, One of them other hole must be big enough so the dowel pin to slide into I guess. So just something for everyone to look out for when they do thier next opti install. Thanks guys for all the suggestions!
