Car wont start but cranks
Car wont start but cranks
Ok so the saga continues. Car wont start but it cranks. i had a mechanic look it over and there telling me the problem is either my distributer, coil, and ignition. i have a msd ignition from summit but i dont know if can get an exchange. Any help would be appreciated
Easy to narrow it down:
Check for spark, pull out a plug wire and see if you're getting spark when you crank it. If so, your problem is either fuel related, or somethings jacked up in the ignition system (crossed plugwires or bad opti). If you're getting spark at all, then it's not your coil or your ignition module. (I'm pretty sure... someone correct me if I'm wrong). No spark = replace coil and test ICM (autozone can do it). If you do that and still no luck, it's more than likely your opti. There are other options, like valves being out of adjustment or something, but it's probably electrical.

The PCM (computer) monitors the engine vital sensors and control devices, and sets "trouble" codes when things aren't working right. You can retrieve the codes from the PCM by attaching a "code reader" to the ALDL connector under the dash, by your right knee. Your 96 has an OBD-II PCM, so all you need is a cheap (<$50) OBD-II code reader to pull the codes out of the PCM.
When you get the codes, you look them up on Shoebox's code list. There's a "tab" for OBD-II Pxxxx format codes at the bottom of the page:

Many auto parts stores have them, and scan for free. But that's not going to help you if it won't start. Might be able to borrow one or rent one. A simple OBD-II code scanneer can cost less than $50. Harbor Freight sells them. More sophisticated scanners or software systems can cost upwards of $500. The GM technicians use the OTC Tech-2, over $2000.
