Car wont shift

Heres the story, I have a 383 with the 4l60e, well the engine work and trans worked great except it had a small leak at the rear main, so we pulled the engine, and just got it all back in, start it up, and put it in gear, and NOTHING. Any suggestions on what I couldve done wrong. Thanks Paul

So it jsut sits there in idle no matter what gear you put it in?
you didnt forget to bolt the flywheel back to the converter did you?

will it drive in first?? and just not shift???

adjust the TV cable at the throttle body

tighten or loosen the cable little by little and take it for a test drive

when i say little by little i mean a 1/4 of an inch is a lot!!

i just had to do this on my friends mustang and the cable adjustments are setup the same way

since its the same tranny you should be able to adfjust it at the TB instead of having to crawl under the car for major adjustments

hope that helps

Anyone, theres one more thing, when i was bolting up the trans to the engine, there was a pop noise, but I think it was just trans lining its self up to the engine. Thanks again.

I'm sure you checked the shift linkage? Just a thought.

Yes, I checked the linkage, the lever on trans moves, and you can hear the trans switch gears when the car is off. Im pretty lost on this one, any more suggestions. Thanks, Paul

Did you make sure the converter was seated correctly on the input shaft?

All i did was unbolt it from the flywheel then bolt the trans and engine together, i never moved the converter. Is there anyway i can tell if the converter is not seated right, and then seat it with the trans in the car at all, or am i screwed. Thanks for you help Paul.

Does reverse work? Does putting it in 1 work? put the car in drive and make sure the driveshaft isn't turning (could always be the rear end but unlikely considering the circumstances that the trans stopped working under). If it just won't move then I'd say its time to take it to a trans shop and have them inspect it. Good luck.

It is a brand new trans, with 200 miles on it, the driveshaft doesnt turn, and none of the gears make the car move at all, thanks paul.

Why don't you just take it back to the trans shop that built the trans. With only 200 miles on the clock I'm sure its under warranty and they won't have a problem checking it out. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

When you tightened the nut that holds on the shift lever did you hold the lever in place (with pliers or something) or just tighten it down. You could have broke something if you were not holding the lever. You don't want to tighten against the internal linkage.

BTW I'm sure you know this but the 4l60e does not have a TV cable. The 4l60 (not e) from a 93 has one
