Car will run for a short while then die/16error

This car is starting to drive me nuts.Since I first got it on the road it would be hard to start when cold 2 or three times then it would run fine a couple months since.A couple of days ago I just replaced the orginal spark plugs with orginal ac/delco platnum tip.It ran fine until I noticed the egr valve vacuum line was a little loose I tighten it.The car ran fine for about 5 minutes then it dies. The egr valve is opening and closing.I reset the code it then runs for a couple of minutes fine then dies.Is the optispark failing?.It looked liked it was replaced before but not shure. The car has 165,000 on it.I just replaced the shift solenoids two weeks ago and finacally it is draining and partally unemployed.

I think the code 16 is for the opti.

Does DTC 16 come back every time it stalls? If so, its indicating the PCM can not find the low resolution signal from the cam position signal in the Opti. When that happens, the PCM shuts down the fuel system.

Could be the optical module in the Opti, could be a loose or corroded Opti harness connector. The "short" Opti harness runs from the gray connector on the EVAP solenoid bracket on the passenger side of the intake manifold to the Opti. Check both ends of the harness for looseness, corrosion or pin damage.

Re: Car will run for a short while then die/16error

A couple of days ago I cleared the code then again I got the 16 error the engine died again after a couple of minutes when the engine is warm. Then I had back it out of the driveway then it died after a couple of minutes warmed up before the flatbed took it over to the local garage to get it repaired. Then the mechanic said that it is your fuel pump? causing this when I told again and again I was getting the 16 error this morning the hell with the error codes it is fuel pump and did not want to hear me at all. When I tried this morning it only ran for about 20 seconds. Also when it did ran it did not run ruff at all very smooth I would think that it not the fuel pump usually when they go either they go the car runs very ruff and or does not run at all.So I sent it to another shop because I was pretty ticked off because of the first guy's attitude.I am waiting to hear back from second guy him tuesday. And I already had changed the fuel filter two months ago and about 3000 miles ago.

Alot of shops think they know how to work on a ltx car, but especially when it comes to the opti, they are lost. Go to shbox.com, and there is a troubleshooting page for the opti, print it out and take it to them. If they are a good shop, they will be able to use that and diagnose the problem pretty quickly. Make sure the water pump is not leaking on the opti.
Depending on miles, may make sense to change out the waterpump also, just for peace of mind. Let us know what they find.
